Carolyn may not want to hear this...rumor is that Ryan Smyth was traded to the Islanders.

What do you all think of the trades? Guerin to San Jose, Tkachuk to Atlanta, Bertuzzi to Detroit?

Bertuzzi shouldn't be playing anymore -- he forfeited that right when he nearly killed a man on the ice (see link below). But hey, I'm glad to see him going to Detroit. That gives us Avs fans more reason to hate the Red Wings.

I visited Vancouver a few years back and I saw quite a few people wearing Bertuzzi jerseys.

Anyway, it'll be interesting tonight as we scored tickets to the game and its the big Messier retirement extravaganza.

(not like the game matters much now, we're so not going to make the playoffs. see why I was so heartbroken last year?)

I was thinking that it was poetic justice for the Wings to get him, since the Colorado/Detroit rivalry has cooled some recently (mostly because the Avs didn't do so hot with the cap, and the Wings, somehow, did) When is Bertuzzi's next game in Colorado?

An aside coastie, where in Colorado are you from? I grew up in Lakewood...now in Maryland with no season tickets in sight!

I'm in Denver. I live near the old Stapleton airport (which is now a neighborhood), and I work downtown, just a couple miles from the Pepsi Center.

The Avs play in Detroit on Sunday, but the Red Wings aren't coming to Denver again this season -- unless it's in the playoffs, but it's doubtful the Avs will make the playoffs this year. Which is kinda weird. They showed up in Denver, won the Stanley Cup, won it again a couple years later, won their division a million times in a row, sold out the arena a billion times in a row ... and now suddenly they're totally pedestrian. They're about to not make the playoffs, most people in Denver can't name more than two current players, and now the more interesting team in town is the Nuggets.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

It always fascinates me how differently 'transfers' work in other sports, compared to football (soccer). I don't fully understand many. How does it work in ice hockey then?

This will be written specifically for hockey, but can be applied with minor variations to almost every team sport in North America.

Players sign term contracts, and teams can trade any player they have under contract, provided he does not have a "no-trade" clause. There are a couple of other restrictions as well - for example, a team that trades away a player cannot reacquire him by trade for at least one year. If that player's contract expires and he becomes a free agent, however, he may return to that team.

It is also worth noting that when a player is traded, his contract goes with him - he does not automatically negotiate one with his new team.

It is almost unheard of for a player to be exchanged just for money in this era.

The biggest obstacle to trades in hockey right now is that the National Hockey League (the biggest league there is) has a strictly enforced salary cap, and most teams don't have a lot of space under this cap, so trades have to be reasonable matches financially as well.

Another distinction is that the only time players CANNOT be traded is between the trading deadline (in hockey six weeks prior to the end of the regular season) and the conclusion of the playoffs, unlike European football's transfer windows. Most trades, however, occur in the few weeks leading up to the deadline as teams know by then whether their records position them to acquire or let go of players. By this time, most of the player's salary is also paid, leaving his new team to pay just 20-25% thereof - a key consideration given the salary cap.

I could go on about this for a long time, but must now get back to work. If you have any specific questions I can probably answer them.

EDIT - The concept of free agency is made so complex in many sports that it cannot be adequately summarized in a few sentences, but it is equally important for managers and players to consider.

Nothing is ever something.

That's really quite different to the transfer system of football (soccer). It seems like there is less chance of a team acquiring all the best players in your system. In fact it sounds impossible, which I guess is why that system is in place.

On the face of it, it seems like a more fair system, but I must be honest and say that I am not sure I would be too happy if this was introduced in football, as then my team would no longer be as dominant as it has been over recent years (and Chelsea defintely wouldn't).

I am pretty sure that it couldn't happen in Europe anyway, as it breaches certain laws here, I'm sure. You'd have to get all the clubs to agree to it, and there is no way on this earth that the really big/rich clubs would. Chelsea in particular.

also, no trades the week before christmas because the NHL cares about their players enough so as not to do any emotional damage with the move and all around the holidays.

another biggie is free agency...a player becomes a free agent (restricted or unrestricted - this will require significant explanation so we'll skip that for now)at the expiry of his contract. at the trade deadline many trades involve free agents and are considered "playoff acquisitions". a team that looks like they are not going to make the playoffs may trade one of the better players for next to nothing with the intent to re-sign him in the off season. in ryan smyth's case there is a 50/50 chance he'll go back to edmonton. the isles will throw a ridiculous amount of money at him but he may take less to come back to edmonton.

Go Canucks Go!

I would say there is about a 3% chance Smyth will return to Edmonton in July. He dug in his heels and appears determined to get as much money as possible. If that's the case, the Oilers were wise to refuse. I think there are too many hurt feelings and too many teams that will line up with stupidly high contracts for him to come back now. I'm guessing at least 6-8 teams (definitely both New York teams and Philly) will offer him $6M a year.

Someone pointed out to me the parallels between this situation and when Paul Coffey left Edmonton...the player's thinking may have been, "I'm Ryan Smyth, they can't trade me," and he just figured they'd empty the vault to keep him around.

Perhaps, also, it's no accident he was traded to the Islanders...the Oilers wanted him to see how good he had it here and figure playing in a half-empty barn even older than Edmonton's will hammer the message home. Make no mistake, the young generation of Oil fans looked upon him as a demigod until details of the negotiations started to trickle out in the media.

In my opinion, both the player and team mishandled the situation in a big way and I'm glad it ended in a trade instead of a catfight...though that possibility still exists.

Nothing is ever something.

I spose I'm getting over it.
Someone in the paper said we should save our pennies from smytty and try to get Iggy who'll become a free agent soon.

Anyway, here's Jonas after the game last week.
Everyone rec'd these foam moose horns;
EDIT: Yeah I guess those are antlers as opposed to horns,
plus he's just so damn cute.
