our beloved cat, kitty was run over and killed this morning.
my wife found her on the road on her way to work.
we're just so incredibly upset. been blubbing all morning.
we loved her so much.

we got her when we lived in Western Australia, and actually bought her back to New Zealand when we moved back, which cost us $1500. we would have paid 10 times that we loved her so much.
we only had her for 18 months, but she was just the best cat in the world. she made such a difference to our life.
we're inconsolable.

in memory of kitty, here's one of our favourite piccies:

I hear ya man. I've lost a few dogs in my day, most recently November of 05 - that was one of the hardest days in recent memory. People that scoff at the loss of pets are heartless assholes. If i can push my opinion upon you, i suggest getting another pet as soon as possible - you aren't replacing the cat, you're simply giving a living thing love, which helps you grieve.

I'm very sorry to hear this

and there's probably not much anyone can do, but if it's any consolation, just remember that it's not the ones who are gone, who are suffering anymore, but the ones who stay
so try and replace the grief with the good memories

take care

Here's a bit of my story, if it's any help:
Last September 17th was the hardest day of my life. I lost my beloved dog Josie. I can't talk/type too much about her, as I'll start sobbing again, and I'm really too tired to do that right now. But I will say that for the last twelve years she was the only real thing that made our house a home, and losing her was a very painful blow. My mother and I talked about getting a new puppy, but she said she'd never be able to love anything that much again, and that it was too painful. Well my good friend's puppy had a litter a couple months later, and one of the puppies just seemed destined to wind up with our family. I no longer live at home, but when I was there after Josie died, the whole house felt wrong. It didn't seem like my home, and all I wanted to do was leave. I can only imagine what it was like for my mother, who was even closer to Josie. But getting little Bowie (yes, named after David) has been the best thing for her. And me, too. He's not a replacement (though my mom swears his personality is so similar, that he's Josie reincarnated, and she thought this BEFORE she found out he was conceived the same weekend Josie died) but he's letting us turn that grief into something positive. There'll never be another dog remotely close to Josie, but at the same time, there'll only be one Bowie in our lives, too. The same goes for your fur-baby. I wish you the best of luck in getting through this painful time, and hope that when the time is right, you'll find another cat just as deserving of your love.

P.S. Here's a couple clips of the little Bowie, which I'm always eager to share:
http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=mrdietr

P.P.S. Last night Adult Swim aired the episode of Futurama where it shows Fry's dog waiting for him in the past. That episode always made be sob like a baby, but last night was the first time it was on since I lost Josie. Needless to say, I changed the channel. But ANYBODY who has a pet they loved should see that episode. It's amazing. DAMN ALL. NOW I'M CRYING AGAIN.

Take care.

I'm really sorry to hear that Benji, I think people (well, dog lovers) often tend to think that people can't possibly get as attached to a cat as you can to a dog. Having lost two myself in my life (admittedly after long lives), I know how much it hurts.

I am not sure you should even try to "replace" her, because as you say, it's probably not gonna happen, but I would echo the suggestion that you do get another cat/pet soon. After our first, we thought we could never get one we loved as much, but if anything we possibly ended up loving the second one even more (it possibly helped that we stuck with tortoise shells - they are renowned for their friendliness).

Yes. Though I am quite the dog lover, I have lost cats before, though I was much younger then. As an adult, I find it easy to relate to Benji with the loss of my dog. It's amazing how much of an emotional investment a pet can be, no matter what species it is. It's wonderful, but times like this make it tough.

Sorry to hear that, Benji, and everyone else who's gone through pet-loss trauma. My brother and his girlfriend were witness to a hit-and-run incident involving a dog recently, and took him to the vet, apparently he wasn't in as bad a state as he seemed.

I was thinking about this thread today. We lost our family dog this afternoon. It happened out of the blue. She was only 7. I don't know what happened -- she might have eaten something bad, or maybe she had something terribly wrong inside her, but she woke up sick this morning at was dead by noon. Today has been one of the worst days ever. I feel worst for my little boys. It was hard to explain to them what was going on. We just thought she was a bit sick this morning, and then next thing we knew she was dead and we were trying to explain it all to the kids. Ugh. Congrats on your new kitties, benji. They're very cute. Maybe in a couple months I'll post pix of a new dog or puppy. Not really ready to consider that, though.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

I suggest you look at this website for the petfood recalls;

http://www.menufoods.com/

I'm 90% sure thats how my cat died.
My friend's dog died suddenly like that and when they took him into the vet, they found he had some of the poison that the food was contaminated with in his system.
Scores of pets are suddenly dying in north america.

Congrats, benji. Cute kittens.

Condolences, coasty. I've got a cat, I'd hate for anything to happen to him while he's so young. I'd probably find it hard to even think of having a new pet at least for a while.

I'll probably contact a vet and let them know exactly what dog food she was eating. But hers wasn't on the list of recalled food, and she'd been eating from this bag for a couple weeks, so I don't think that's it. Still, it's a possibility, and I'd hate to think other dogs might die, so that's why I think I should contact a vet.

Thanks for the kinds words, you guys. They help.

Thanks, LBF. Yeah, we will find a new friend to enrich our family. We got this one when my wife and I were a young couple, and I sort of resisted at first, but as our family grew -- we have two sons -- I remembered how integral pets are to a family. It was that way when I was young, and it's still that way now that I'm a parent. I told my wife and kids today that a family isn't a family without a dog, and that when the shock wears off, we'll bring a new one into our home. There are thousands of animals out there, waiting for a family. Many get put down, and we intend to save one.

Still, I'm just being brave, talking about all that. We're so goddam heartbroken over this. It's just as bad as when a person who's close to you dies. Maybe worse -- no person is as loyal as that dog was.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

Je me remémore mes animaux morts
je me remémore mes animaux morts

L'vendeur m'avait dit qu'elles d'vaient bien grandir

Oui je me remémore mes animaux morts
Oui je me remémore mes animaux morts

Oui je me remémore mes animaux morts
Oui je me remémore mes animaux morts

That pic reminds of my cat, "Bob" when she was just a wee one. We rescued her from the pound, and she's now about 14 years old.

She's indoor/outdoor, but always comes home. One night she didn;t come to the door and I couldn't find her. I walked around the neighborhood for an hour at 2 a.m. and had this horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that she was gone somehow and couldn't believe how emotional I got over it.

She was there the next morning at the door. I guess she just went for an extended adventure.

But that experience let me know just how much you can love a pet - they are like a family member.

I feel for you benji, and I'm glad you found some new kitties to love.

That's terrible, coastline. I feel bad for your family. Whenever I hear about something like this, it hurts. When it happens so unexpectedly, it's just gut wrenching.

I can remember when I lost my pet dog back in Primary School. The teacher tried to comfort me by saying "don't be sad, just think of all the happy times you shared together". This made things 10 times worse.

I empathize with you both.
