What's your favourite / least favourite FB CD or LP packaging?

For me the Debut album's packaging is perfect. It's still got a bit of 4ad wierdness, an excellent Frank Black logo, and some cool inside pictures.

I'd say the worst is FB and the C's debut. The colour is maybe a nod to the first FB album, but the writing on the front and the tribal art is pretty awful. As for the inside, only the lyrics.

i would say the debut album is my favorite album as well. the pics of frank really crack me up, and the cover is great. i prefer having the lyrics in the album.

here's my rankings
orange album
teenager of the year
cult of ray (pic of the band is cool)
all my ghosts ep (this is my favorite cover)
pistolero
honeycomb
dits
christmass
fastman/raiderman
fbc's debut
devils workshop
black letter days (to grey and depressing for me)

Although it is my favourite album for the music, Black Letter Day has a very disappointing cover, and Devil's Workshop isn't much better. I really like the Dog in the Sand artwork because it has good pics of the Catholics and a good booklet, but Teenager is my favourite (athough my partner always says the cover photo is 'scary'!)

The absolute worst CD packaging (not cover art) is the frankblackfrancis cardboard paclaging...I hate it when anyone releases CDs in that crap....I hardly listen to it just because I dont want to scratch it every time I take it out. If there is a jewel cased version, I'd like to get it.

I agree. When I took the security sticker thing off frankblackfrancis it took off some of the colour.

I don't know what the best cover art is. I suppose I quite like SMYT. I like the actual packaging of Christmass too, with the cardboard sleeve aswell as the jewel case.

I always liked the BLD cover but then I like grey and depressing. Or maybe it's just my posture on illegal immigration. Also, having been raised by a Canadian mother, I like the spelling "grey", which still causes grief at times. I'm unrepentant.

For me the low point is the cover of Devil's Workshop.

i like the Frank Black Francis artwork, from a stylistic point of view it looks great. I myself like the cardboard, but i guess thats must a matter of preference

I DARE you to prove to me that ISN'T the cover. The best part is that it's printed on the back side of a long strip of sandpaper, which wraps around the disc. I'm totally telling the truth. Pinky swear.

If you gotta go "Blue", don't go too "finger". Otherwise I can do "sand", so long as it doesn't shed all over the neighbors, lessen' they deserve it, o' course. I'm kiddin', 'cept that I don't know what I'm talkin' 'bout.

Love it, prozacrat. Especially all the blue fingers and the F that looks like the flying P from the Pixies logo. But would BF ever pick it for the official cover? Seems like anything could happen these days.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

1. It is, indeed, Captain Pasty.
2. That's not Frank. Just a guy in a black shirt and invisible pants.

Ha, I've only just noticed that everyone on the picture has a blue finger! Honestly, I'll be seriously disappointed if this doesn't somehow end up as the official cover!

That's a female Black Francis, in all innocence. Its home is on the fridge. It can't ever be the cover. The cover will be as dissapointing as all the others. Even my favourie one doesn't do justice to the songs inside. What are the songs on Bluefinger? It sounds imaginary. Is it real?

I think TOTY's album cover was his worse. It was a critical time in FB's solo career in terms of sales and expanding his fan base. And TOTY was probably his most accesible music up to that point. Unfortunately, a lot of people were puzzled and turned off by the image. I do believe I was able to understood what the image was trying to convey; however, to the mainstream, I think the cover's meaning kind of went over the mass's heads. Personally, my least favorite album cover (and least favorite album) would be 'Cult of Ray'. And my favorite? His very first solo album, 'FB'.

Cover art (F)ranked:

1. Fastman Raiderman
2. Oddballs
3. Show Me Your Tears
4. Teenager Of The Year
5. Snake Oil
6. Dog In The Sand
7. Debut
8. Honeycomb
9. Christmass
10. One More Road For The Hit
11. Devil's Workskop
12. Black Letter Days
13. Pistolero
14. Frank Black And The catholics
15. Cult Of Ray

#6&7 would be much higher taken the whole packaging into account. Probably #2&3 on such a list.

Oh how I wish he'd use some 4ad graphics on his solo stuff too. I know a lot of people are turned off by his covers post-Teenager. A few weeks ago I recommended the first Catholics album to a friend who's seen Frank a few times and really likes the records he's heard, but even if it was on sale for less than 3 pounds he says he didn't want something as ugly as that in his collection, so he'd rather burn/download it, and added that if the artist/label weren't willing to spend any money on artwork, why should he? Pistolero is his favourite Frank album but he burned that too, for the same reasons.
