Damn me not trusting my insticts on the Departed for best picture. I thought that the Academy was just too hard over Clint Eastwood's recent bevy of shit films that they'd fellate him yet again like they did with Million Dollar Baby and Mystic River. Ditto for Whitaker/O'Toole. Those two cost me the win.
Congrats Floop. As you're the industry guy, its only appropriate.
At least i beat coastline like he owes me money.

3 for 24! Almost as good as this guy I work with, who literally got every one of them wrong two or three years ago. I would have gotten 4 if I'd have trusted the dice on the animated films. I overrode the dice when they told me "Happy Feet," because I thought "Cars" was the better movie. And it truly was -- in every way. I don't know so much about the Oscars, but the Academy doesn't know a tightly written animated movie when it sees one. "Happy Feet" was a mess. Those penguins can suck my balls.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

thanks guys. it was fun to play with you. i'm glad that everyone played like adults and didn't resort to name calling or immature antics. sometimes in these contests tensions can run hot and people don't act courteously, and that defeats the purpose of the game. for instance, it wouldn't be in good taste to point out how hard each of you sucked my balls in this contest. it's not about winning or losing, or whose balls got sucked (mine), but it's the joy of the game that matters. i'm not going to sit here and bring up anyone's particularly bad oscar pick (brian - iwo jima best picture) or make fun of the person in last place (coastline.. 3?)... all i really want to do is say thanks to you guys.

I couldn't even watch it after 30 minutes. It was even worse than a couple years ago when suddenly Hollywood was trying to be all cool (for one night) by recognizing blacks...as if they had never been in movies before.

Surprized at The Departed's triumph, but happy for Scorsese. And Pan's Labyrinth won a couple, I still haven't seen it. The Ferrell/Black/Reilly song was pretty funny! |

Yeah, I noticed that. Obviously the fact that Dreamgirls was only released yesterday over here was a huge disadvantage for us.

in my defence, I haven't seen any of the nominated films. In fact, I don't think I've seen any of last year's either.
I Helen Mirren though.

I saw Pirate's. That's it.
I also saw Snakes on a Plane, Miami Vice, Jackass 2, Stranger than Fiction and Talladega Nights. I never got around to seeing Borat, but that was nominated. I would do better in a Razzies® Pool probably. But I still beat Darwin, that's all that counts.

it's not really about seeing all the films but judging what the hype is. if there is tons of buzz about a film or performance then that's the one that will usually win, even if the film sucked and the hype is constructed by a high-powered marketing campaign ..
there are always surprises though. i can't believe PAN'S LABYRINTH didn't win best foreign film. and i'm surprised Alan Arkin won.

I cannot believe that Departed won best movie... has anyone seen the original Infernal Affairs movies? Departed is a remake... and the original is much much better, possibly 1 & 2 are in my top ten fave movies of all time. You guys should check these movies out if you haven't seen them.
It's a sad state of affairs when a remake of a film made about 5 years ago gets an Oscar... Scorcese, as much as I admire him as a director got this one on a sympathy vote.
This is a high class bureau de change, not some Punch & Judy show on the seafront at Margate! |

can you name a better film from 2006 though? i don't really see how it being a re-make really matters. i mean, i guess it kind of matters, but what really matters is if the film is good or not, which it was. still haven't seen INFERNAL AFFAIRS but i have it on my netflix list
