So was just on Wikipedia reading about the Pixies (again), and saw this...
Sounds - Runner up Album of the Year - - Doolittle - 1989
Melody Maker - Runner up Album of the Year - Doolittle - 1989
Anyone know which album was 'album of the year' according to those mags?

I've just done a quick search. Apparently Sounds' was The Stone Roses self titled and Melody Maker's was Disintegration by The Cure.

I haven't heard Disintegration but I'd say Doolittle is better than The Stone Roses.

| from my (admittedly shoddy) memory, there were two best album charts in melody maker each year - one voted by readers and one voted by critics - and doolittle won the readers poll (but not the critics poll) in 1989 ... conversely, I think surfer rosa won the critics poll but not the readers poll in 1988, but I seem to remember the write up being a bit begrudging about it (reference to it being most critics' 2nd choice) |

| The Stone Roses self titled album was pretty good. Kind of hard to compare it to Doolittle, they are completely different musically. |
