Imo, is one of the best frontmen ever. And one of the best lyricists of all time too. He is so highly entertaining live.
I seem to go on a Hip kick everytime I see them live which is quite often and quite patriotic if you're Canadian.
His adlibs and improvisations to his own lyrics are such a trip. A slight glimpse into a truly unique brain. His shrieking last night would've put Kate Bush to shame.
One of the things I hate most about concerts here is that I'm sure that someone tell the bands "Hey you're in Edmonton so say something about how much you hate the city of Calgary and oh yeah talk about hockey and the Oilers." Which so many bands do and then the crowds always scream and generally freak out like the sheep they are. But in this case Gordie comes out and says; Edmonton! Bring out your dead Edmonton! Love it.

yes, c. he is very entertaining. but i always think of lewis black when he is on a rant. same shaky head and finger-tap thing going on. i haven't seen the hip in a good ten years now. think i will try and track them down if they play ona convenient night or with good support.

Anyone with a genuine interest in Canadian popular culture probably already knows this, but if you don't: read up on Downie and The Tragically Hip.
Allow me to qualify the following statement by admitting I have no idea how they are seen outside Canada, and maybe it's just because I grew up watching it happen, but: I can't imagine a band being more beloved in their motherland whilst being all but ignored around the rest of the world. I mean, this is a band that has long proven able to sell as many tickets at jacked-up prices as Tool, Pearl Jam, or any other "stadium rock" band that hits the Canadian market.
Just so nobody takes this as a rabid fan's rant, I consider them one of the biggest hit-or-miss bands I've ever heard. Their best songs are among the finest I've ever heard, but I consider a lot of it crap too.
Glad you had a blast, Carolyn. I don't really have much to add on the topic, just had to comment. I would be interested to know if people anywhere else in the world realize how big this band is here. Hell, I'm interested to know if Canadians feel the same way. I don't care if you like them or not, try to convince me they are not the most beloved rock stars in the land.

I love more modern Canadian bands than from any other country, but I have never heard of these. Perhaps I need to look into discovering more Canadian bands from yesteryear.
So what else can you tell me about them? Influences? Influenced?

I guess if you've never heard the Tragically Hip its best to start with a best of like Yer Favourites;
They do have quite the discography as they've been around since 1987.
It is pure Canadiana though. I mean they even have a song called At the Hundredth Meridian. Songs about a missing hockey player from back in the day, songs about a guy from Saskatchewan wrongfully accused of murder (quite a famous case here), songs about small Canadian towns like Bobcaygeon etc etc.
The most well known Hip song would have to be New Orleans is Sinking which came out in 1989. Its funny because that song was kinda banned for a little while in 2005. Some of my faves would be Ahead by a Century, Grace Too, So Hard Done By, Locked in the Trunk of a Car, Long Time Runnin...there's too many to pick.

True, but 95% of that list ain't Canada either. Easily explained away by the fact that internet stats only account for the over-Americanized minority in this country. Most of us don't have computers in our igloos yet, so those searches can be chalked up to expatriate Yanks.
I must commend floop for bothering to do this; most people would have taken the dig lying down. I am so impressed, in fact, that I will let him crawl back into his California cocoon and take this one. Not that anything has been proven.
The lists do make me wonder who the hell half those people are...and what Winterlicious is, but I'm not curious enough to go search for their press clippings, that would be American of me.

I don't mind the Hip, and I like a few of their song (I think "Ahead By A Century" is great), and Gord Downie in particular seems to geniune, literate, and an over all good guy. All that said, I get this feeling that it's unpatriotic to not like the Hip (kind of like not liking hockey), and people are kind of in disbelief if you don't think they're the greatest thing ever. For example, I think people who don't revere the Pixies or the Beatles are downright stupid, but I don't think it makes them any less American or British (or whatever), you know what I mean?
Also, there's a bit too much of a frat boy fanbase for my liking. One of those, "I don't hate the band, I hate their fans", which is really unfair to the band, I must admit. Oh, and I like "Poets" and "Music At Work". I always thought the latter sort of sounded like a GBV song.
maybe I'll kick it

I am really only familiar with the hits, but the biggest fan I know says the albums to start with would be Road Apples and Phantom Power. In my opinion this is a band whose best songs actually get picked for singles, so a greatest hits-type collection like the one Carolyn suggested would be a safe bet too.

I LOVE the Hip!!! and especially Gordon Downie - his two solo cd's are good too
the thing about the Hip in America is - you have to check from time to time to see if they have something new out because you're not going to just hear about it. So when I saw this thread I did a quick check and sure enough they have a new one that is already out in Canada but not yet in the states (but you can order it on-line)
so thanks for that
I discovered them when they came through Houston for Fully Completely tour - and we only went because another show we wanted to see that night had sold out - so we just said "well let's check this band out". I just remember that night after the show we thought it was the most powerful music we'd heard in a long long time. And I've been hooked ever since
this is a band that really really sinks in when you see them live
you gotta see them live to really get it - even Fully Completely, as great as it is, doesn't come close to capturing the energy of the band on stage |

I agree because I don't listen to them much until after I go to a concert. (Oh and roadtrips.) Gordie is so good live.
Here's the first single off the new album (In View); http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=7FC079CC4C77EF4A

It's different - I don't remember keyboards playing so prominent a role in their previous tunes - but I like it.
It's an example of the "had to see them live thing". If this was the first Hip tune I heard - I probably would not be a new convert. But I hear Downie singing and it I'm right there in the front row all over again. |

It probably has something to do with catching snowflakes on your tongue.
I really don't know much about Mr. Downie, but my girlfriend has a few Tragically Hip albums, and has seen them live in New York.

No, see, that's a DIFFERENT band that's popular in Canada but fairly obscure in the States.

the hip played winnipeg last night and got pretty good reviews. they are a GREAT band live. i used to be a pretty big fan. i didn't go last night but i think i've seen them live about 15 times.
and the frat boy fanbase can be irritating sometimes. they played the sasquatch festival last year in washington state and there were lots of canadians down just to see them play. a lot of them were pretty hammerered (fuckin eh!) but fairly abnoxious in telling americans how great the band is..so that was kind of off putting. i do think they are a great band and not really sure why they haven't been more successful internationally. up to here and road apples are my favorites. phantom power is pretty good too.
i went a few times to see them play at first avenue in minneapolis. the show would be completely filled with canadians. i think the band was a bit disappointed cause they tour the states to promote themselves and they end up getting a bunch of canadians coming to their shows.
