Man, I wish I had bought twice as many Apple shares as I did last week. Still, today is a good day even though I'm sicker than a dog.... and oh yes, I do want one very much.
It looks like there's a smartcard slot, so you could easily double the capacity to 8, which is usable at least for me.

There's no smartcard slot. You get 4 gigs for $499 or 8 gigs for $599. But it's being billed as a phone with iPod capability, not a standalone iPod. So storage had to take a back seat for now.
I think a lot of people won't shell out that much for a phone. Apple-philes, like me, will do it just because it's cool and we go blind when it comes to practical matters like the fact that we don't have $500 right now. I took a line of credit two years ago to pay for my current iPod. But I think when the price comes down a bit and the storage increases (because it inevitably will), this will become a very popular device. It's already the coolest mobile phone ever, and it won't hit the shelves until June.

Yeah, I'm a gadget fiend and would buy it, too. Especially since I need a new phone. My only wonder is what will happen with the phone outside the US?

Haven't read that yet. It'll be exclusively on the Cingular network in the U.S. Apple will introduce it in the UK in the third quarter of 2007 and in Asia in 2008. No idea about Canada. Are you on different type networks than the U.S., Dean?
EDIT: This is from Apple's press release: iPhone is a quad-band GSM phone which also features EDGE and Wi-Fi wireless technologies for data networking. Apple has chosen Cingular, the best and most popular carrier in the US with over 58 million subscribers, to be Apple’s exclusive carrier partner for iPhone in the US.

We have GSM networks here as well as the other one (whose name is escaping me). The company providing it is not my favourite, but I'd go with them if I could use an iPhone...
I'd be even happier if we could just use this phone with SIM cards ala Europe and I could buy it in Australia. :)

Seriously though, I don't see what all the fuss is about. I am sure it's an excellent device, but I'd rather have an 80gb MP3 player, and a seperate phone.

It is nice to walk around with my entire library, but I think I could adjust to 8 gigs and having to be a little selective. However, I think the small size will render it pretty useless for video except maybe one small tv show or a few small clips. But having them all in one is a definite advantage for someone who doesn't really want to feel like Batman when he goes out anymore (you know, camera on belt, phone on belt, iPod on belt, etc). Not... that I've done that.

I've got an ipod and a phone and I know what Dean means about it sometimes just being a hassle to carry stuff like that around. But theres no way I'll buy yet another gadget just to free up an extra pocket in my jeans. Plus it has less memory than my ipod.

Well, my cellphone is five years old and massive (I often tell people it's a satellite phone when they comment on it) and my iPod is three years old and aging. By the time I'm back in Canada, I'll probably want a new one of each. Think of the money I'm saving over a stylish phone AND the latest iPod. :)
