So 2007 has barely had its cord cut and tiny diaper applied, yet I'm already tired of hearing bands being compared to Bruce Springsteen. To be fair, these comparisons started in 2006, with everyone from The Killers to The Hold Steady being deemed "Springsteenesque". Now everyone (and by everyone, I mean loners with blogs, which I then read) is jumping over their keyboards to pronounce Win Butler's vocals on the new Arcade Fire record to be somewhat Boss-ish. Serioulsy, this yearly, cyclical recycling of sounds and references has become so tiresome and stale that I've become one of those people that claim that the state of new music is tiresome and stale. Post-post-punk, new-new-wave, and now, I suppose uber-Boss?
I have no problem with bands having influences (who doesn't?); nothing is created in a vaccuum. Is it a grand coincidence that several new albums by indie (may that short lived non-genre signifier rest in peace, 2006) are supposedly influenced or sound like Springsteen? Or is it that music writers run like lemmings off the cliffs of Boss (or Joy Division, or the Beatles, or whichever the "it" album of the moment purportedly sounds like) and all fall with dull thud in a chasm of like-sounding articles, blog-post, opinions and pronouncments?
So that's it folks, watch out for a year of hard workin', blue collar, bar band, patriotic rock n' roll, except cool because all the indie kids are doing it. And I find it hard to believe that Win Butler sounds like the Boss. I've heard Intervention, I love Interventions, and to me it sounds just like an Arcade Fire song.
Incindently, did anyone grab Black Wave/Whatever it's called when it was mistakenly uploaded? I can't find it (likely because it was for charity, which makes me feel like a jerk for trying to get it free...) Does THAT sound like Springsteen?
maybe I'll kick it

Is this just a rant because I've been too busy running around to reply to your email fully? :)
That said, I actually can't imagine anyone saying Win sounds like anyone, much less the Boss in any of his periods.

Up until I read that, I would have said "no", but yes that is exactly why. And I can't decide which is truer (or lamer), that all bands now sound like Springsteen, or that all critics feel that way ('all' being an extreme hyperbole, of course).

I love The Hold Steady, but I've never once thought they sounded anything like Springsteen.
That tag is certainly a problem this year, it seems.

You confuse me Mike2. This is surely down to lazy journalism, not bands actually sounding like Bruce?
I can't think of any new musical artist that sounds too much like him.

That what I was getting at Mike1, I can't decide if I'm dissapointed that all news bands sound like ________, or that journalists all describe all new bands as sounding like __________. I'm sure it's a bit of both, but it's definitely wearing thin.

Iīve been staying away from all these new bands with names beginning with "the", so I have no idea what Bruce Springsteen sounds like refracted through their hipster sound. I donīt listen to Bruce Springsteen much, maybe itīs an ill effect of growing up when he was in his phase of making shoutyshouty anthems with ugly horn sections.

"all these new bands starting with 'the'"
i can't believe a band is judged based on the article "the."
listen to what you like, but don't NOT listen to something based on the genre it is or isn't in, or on whether there's a certain article in their name.

We're listening to Lucero at work today. That's either a Springsteen inflection in the vocals, or a Rod Stewart...

Give the planet's rather large population, I think there is a good chance that two people will sing in a similar style.

I used to think Liars were called The Liars but turns out itīs just Liars and therefore okay to listen to. This has nothing to do with genre, I just noticed a rash of bands with this article all at once and when something comes along in a big crowd like that Iīm more inclined to go looking for fringe-dwellers. Maybe it was in this instance the article happened to prefix deeply unimaginative nouns like Killers or Strokes or Arctic Monkeys, itīs just a feeling I get, my criteria may sound strange but youīve got your own too, thereīs no better or worse between either.
