I thought my Fb-nerd bretheren might enjoy this: Some of you may have run across these "20 Questions" gadgets. It is a small, rond, computerized toy that can guess an object, person, or place in 20 questions or less. Recently they released a music edition. I had the opportunity to pick at one tonight. I watched it get passed around the room and it correctly answered Sting, Paul McCartney, Wham, etc, etc. Then it was my turn. Naturally my first instinct was to try Frank Black so I could ridicule the poor machine for having poor taste in music after I stumped it. My wife and I were shocked when after 12 guesses, it said "You are Frank Black." Paul fricking McCartney took all 20 guesses. Some of the questions were: Did you originate in the U.S.?---yes Did you take place in N.Y.C?(whatever the hell that means)---no Were you popular in the 80's?---yes Do you play pop music?---no Is your music considered angry?---yes(by some) Can you buy a ticket for one of your shows?---sometimes Did you tour in 2005?---yes Did you have an impact on music history?---yes Are you Frank Black?---yes I thought this was pretty cool. Perhaps a Fb fan helped design this little gizmo. I also tried Bauhaus and it guessed Joy Division--pretty close.

In a sense I think the little gizmo was "designed" by the people that go to the web site and answer questions and give the final answer.
I have one of the original 20Q (no specific topic) and they really are amazing. The seemingly ask stupid questions and even repetitive questions and then boom "Are you thinking of a waffle iron?" "Yeah" |

I just did the web version. It took 24 questions (after 17, it guessed Jello Biafra). After it guessed correctly, it argued with me about some of my answers. For example, 20Q asked me if FB is "good-looking." I said "sometimes." 20Q pointed out that the correct answer is "No." 20Q's official answers appear to be based on the popularity of certain answers -- it keeps track of every answer anyone has ever given. Pretty cool.
My mom says she bought the regular 20Q toy for my 7-year-old for Christmas. I can't wait to exercise my parental authority and make sure it's in good working order before he plays with it. :)
Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho? |

I did the one at 20q.net and it says Frank Black is popular with teenagers. I wouldn't have thought he's specifically popular with teenagers (although I am a teenager myself) is he?

I tried it with Robert Pollard, and it failed. It issues with some of my answers (meaning: its answers were wrong).
maybe I'll kick it

I've always seen teens at his solo shows. Not tons, but a good handfull.

yeah, I like the whole arguing and keeping track of answers it does. For example it argued me answering "Sometimes" instead of "No" to the question whether or not he wears make-up (remember the eye-liner?) |

My 7-year-old got one of these units for Christmas today. It's really good at guessing "Christmas tree." I suspect lots of people tried that one on their new ones today.
