First - I absolutely love Honeycomb - it's in my top 5 of all times/ deserted island CDs.

What is the story behind Strange Goodbye? People on here say that it is "so sad". Is it just the divorce or was there something more?
Thanks!

Just the divorce - you know, saying goodbye to a longtime friend and love I guess. That it's obvious they still care about each other and had some good times and that's all gone.

Also, amazingly, sung with Frank's ex-wife, I believe. I agree. The first song on that disc that made me listen to the whole thing over and over.

Yeah, that's right. I assumed that went without saying.

As I understand it, they were never in the studio together, though. They sung their parts separately. For whatever reason, that kinda killed the magic for me. Otherwise, it's a great song. And her voice sounds good with his (not as good as Kim's, though).

Really? I never heard that. In fact, I thought I recalled someone saying that them singing it together in the studio made people 'uncomfortable'.

I've read they were still married at the time, but that's neither here nor there.

"I was writing the song at the Burbank airport and I said "I want to sing this with Jean as a duet." as a kind of Johnny Cash and June Carter thing, almost show-bizzy. And so I called her and she said "yeah, no problem" and so I did write it with that in mind. We weren't in the studio at the same time --I think we both would have got a little too choked up if that had been the case-- but it was our way of sealing things and also to prevent a kind of happy, almost humorous face in the light of it all."

This song was one of the few on Honeycomb that really took me a long time to get into. At first I couldn't stand it, now that I finally got used to it, its a really great song. I love it.

At first, I thought a few of the songs on Honeycomb were a bit gimmicky -- this one, Song of the Shrimp, and Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day -- but eventually I grew to accept them as part of a brilliantly conceived album.
