I'd say unplugged. I like that the songs are so good that just one man and an acoustic guitar can sound just as good as a full band version.

Unplugged, a hundred times over. And when I say that, I'm referring mostly to hearing him solo acoustic (live). I'm that way with all my favorite artists. When it's just the singer and their guitar/piano/whatever, you're getting the raw, unadorned song, played just the way it sounded as the artist was writing it. Gimme a singer with a guitar, "naked" before the audience, with the occasional missed note, any time. I don't have much used for super-produced music. Take FB's "My Terrible Ways," for example. The bluesy album version does absolutely nothing for me. But the versions from this summer's solo acoustic tour are amazing.
But then there are the Pixies songs. Those are a real treat when they're solo acoustic, but the full-band, album versions are better. Not that FB's versions aren't amazing, but the Pixies, well, they're the Pixies. It's a whole different thing.

Even though i'm totally breaking the rules, i'll take him this fall tour: solo acoustic to start, and then rock out with the band. Best of both worlds. Because some days, you want your acoustic FB, and others, the electric seems like the better option.

It's a really hard question and I don't have a very good answer. Just like my favorite FB songs and CDs change around a lot so do my plugged/unplugged preferences.
As far as live goes- the most rocking concert of my life was seeing FB and his crew live a few weeks ago. But, I think as far as live goes, I would have to say unplugged because I really experienced the songs in a new way and it seemed more intimate.
As far as recordings go, I would say plugged. 1826 is my favorite rock n roll song and that rocks. I think in general right now I prefer loud rock n roll over unplugged.... |

I love the acoustic mini-sets and then transitioning to !rock! But if I had to choose one or the other...

I would say full band
The other instruments and all the leads and little fills add so much color to the songs. He also seems to sing with just as much emotion when is with the band as when he is alone. |

Both please. Though the best Frank show I've ever seen (Dallas, 1999) was a full-on Catholics show.
One thing I do like about the solo acoustic performances though is that he seems more likely to experiment with the songs in that setting. And I'm talking about more than just adapting band arrangements into solo-guitar arrangements. I'm talking about playing around with the melody or the tempo. This particularly true of his recent solo performances of Pixies material. I still love that (very odd) solo version of "Mr. Grieves" from last Halloween night that some kind soul Youtube'd. |

It's all great. But I have a soft sport for the Lyle Workman version of the Catholics.
One of the funnest(sp?) shows I've seen FB play was opening solo for They Might Be Giants when he kept just adding guiatrs ot himself. He's play a couple songs, sings the current guiatr over his back, and then strap on a new guitar. By the end of the show he was wearing 8 or 9 guitars. It was original, fun, and a great show. Then he came on to sing "Spy" with TMBG.
I love the way he keeps it fresh and tries new things. We all have our favorites, but I love the new band as well, and they are just starting out! Who knows how great they'll be over time. Billy Block and Duane Jarvis kick ass. i love to see a band having fun, and these guys seem to be. The Catholics were looking a bit tired and bored toward the end, I think. |

I have to admit, plugged. I love the acoustic versions of Around The World and Dead Man's Curve, but when I heard them with the full band, 'twas just so amazing.
Acoustic is always very personal and subtle, but when plugged, you can feel so much energy. To be completely honest, I couldn't live without either. But if I had to pick one... |

Definetly plugged in, preferably with the catholics. The recent "solo" gigs that i've heard dont sound as good....sorry !
