First, a disclaimer: I don't know how to play guitar, and I'm just learning the piano, so this might sound dumb.

I'm trying to play I'll Be Blue on the piano, using the guitar tabs from frankblack.net, but there seems to be a bit of a problem on the opening chord progression. The F# chord doesn't sound right at all. Does it sound right to you guitar players?

Has anyone else tried to work this song out on the piano?

The F# chord is G/F#. Hopefully the G chord before the G/F# sounds good to your ears because G/F# is virtually the same as G except you play an F# (root) note instead of a G note, that's all. I presume on a piano it's a case of moving the one finger that plays the G note down one to F#.

e-------------
b-------------
g--0------0---
d--0------0---
a--x------x---
e--3------2---
   G G/F#

On a guitar, the 3 here is a G note, the 2 is F#. You see?

I've confused myself. Sorry, C. A piano man will surely pop in and tab you the correct chord.

Thanks, fbc. Like I said, I'm a beginner, and now it's obvious how dumb my question was. At any rate, I took what you told me and played it, and it sounds great. The only problem with playing this song, though, is that it puts a person into a real funk! I guess I need to figure out Billy Radcliffe or Johnny Barleycorn now to get happy again.

I wouldn't say it was a dumb question if you learnt something new. Good luck tickling the ivories.

I've just been playing this. I'm going to try and learn how to play the piano properly. This is a good song to start it seems. Not too hard to change from one chord to any other for a beginner and it's a slow tempo song.

Pity I've only got a keyboard that must be about 500 years old to learn on. I'm enjoying playing it though.

How are you on the piano now, coastline?
