If you saw Frank Black at the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C. help me fill-in the setlist. Here's what I've got...

Frank came out and played solo-acoustic for 6 songs. Then introduced the band.
1. Holiday song - solo
2. California Bound - solo
3. Whiskey in Your Shoes - solo
4. Cactus - solo
5. Brackish Boy - solo
6. My Life is in Storage (used the refrain to introduce the band)
7. Remake/Remodel
8. Living on Soul
9. 666
10. Maybe I'll Kick It (not sure of title)
11. ---don't know title--- chorus was "do what you want" ...
12. Bullet (i went to pee)
13. I'll Be Blue
14. Raiderman
15. 10 Percenter (I was going nuts at this point. 10 Percenter!!!!)
16. Horrible Day
17. Suffering
18. Johnny Barleycorn
19. All My Ghosts
20. Burnt Out Rock 'n Roll (cover - said he found it on the Smithsonian music archive)
21. Put the Needle in My Arm (Dylan cover)
22. Nadine
23. My Terrible Ways
24. I Burn Today (sure to become a standard at his shows)
25. Sing For Joy (played this at Berkeley too. I blame "Survivor")

That's what I've got. I might be wrong about the title of a couple of the covers but he played 25 glorious songs. We all stayed for an encore but there was none to be had. This was a great show with decent sound...could have been better. I saw Frank at the Greek Theatre a few weeks ago and the sound was amazing. He played many of the same songs but it is obvious that he is at his best in a rock club. He talked to us a little and showed a lot more personality. I've seen Frank as an opening act and as a headliner and I enjoy him a lot more as the headliner.

This is the second time I've seen Frank at the 9:30 Club. The last time was when he was touring for Cult of Ray (he drank a glass of wine and tapped his foot while his band vamped The Marsist.

If you saw the show what did you think of it?

Cheers all!

I was right at the stage, directly in front of Frank Black. I picked up 2 picks, gave one away - didn't get to snag the set list 'cause I realized there wasn't going to be an encore too late. We missed out on two songs "I'm not dead (I'm in Pittsburgh)" which was supposed to come before "Sing for Joy". And the encore was supposed to be "Dog" presumeably "Dog Sleep". From memory here is the setlist as it was written (I believe most letters were uppercase execpt for i).

Acoustic - The first six songs done solo acoustic
Remake
Soul
666
Curve
Gyneswr <- don't remember how it was spelled
Bullet
Blue
Raiderman
10%
Horrible
Suffering
Johnny <- starts column 2
Ghosts
Rock'n'roll
World
Nadine
Terrible
Burn
Pittsburgh <- not played
Joy
---- <- black line
Dog <- not played

The show was good. It would've been better for me if I were several feet to the right or left - better view and less spit. Musically, the Catholics were a much better band - missing a lot of the guitar solos. I saw them last at the Black Cat in I think 2002. Last time Reid seemed to have a different bassist - but the songs stayed the same. We also had the Bennies.

I loved it. That was my first FB concert, and it was one of, if not THE best show I've ever been to. The only show I've seen that compares was Brian Wilson's SMiLE at the Warner Theatre.

I was able to catch two shows on this tour 10-11-06 ( houston )
and 10-14-06 ( st petersburg, fla )
Kentucky prophet opened in houston and was great.
The Houston crowd was a bit smaller but seemed to be alot more livlier than in florida. There seemed to be alot of blank stares in florida but alot of people. there was a chick in the balcony that was so excited we thought she may jump over the rail, and that was cool to see.
unfortunatley frank opened the florida show with an acoustic set but we missed that, however we got to chat with eric drew feldman after the show and that was cool . He said they recorded TOTY in about 5 days
( plus some vocals ) which is unbelievable given the magnitude of that CD. Seeing two shows in a week was a real treat and , if I ever hit the lotto im gettin a tour bus and following, for the whole damn tour !

I was at the show and loved it. I'm unsure of why he did not have an encore. There was some odd yelling from the balcony, and I'm afraid that it may have turned him off.

Also, Reid Paley was really good. I think, for me, he got lost between the raucous Bennies and David Lovering's odd magic show when I saw FB and the C at the Black Cat.

I was disappointed with no encore, any ideas why there was none?

There haven't been any encores this tour, so don't feel bad.

Good question! How can one go to pee during a FB show? I would just tie up a knot!

Last night was my first FB concert -- and it blew me away. I was probably about 10 rows back, the tall guy with the black shirt who was doing his best to lead by example and get everyone to rock out. I thought the crowd was pretty decent for the most part, though a little too much standing still for my tastes.

By far the highlight was his performance on Six Sixty Six -- it was electrifying and completely surpassed the album version. I loved Frank doing his thing, but it would've been nice to hear Headache (the first FB solo song I got into after paying my dues getting to know the Pixies well).

Frank IS rock n' roll.

Opening act was supposed to go on at 7:30. I didn't show up until about 9:45, though. FB was scheduled to go on at 10 PM. He got started right on time and played until around 11:40.

This was my first FB solo show, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was a bit disappointed that there was no encore, as a lot of people stuck around for one, but the quality of the show more than made up for it. The 9:30 Club was only about half full, and I think a smaller venue (Black Cat? DC9?) would have better suited this show. Did anyone else notice the dancing machine guy on the left side near the bar? Crazy.

I was pleased (I guess) to see that we weren't the only ones who didn't get an encore. I, too, surmised that something had offended him -- or that he'd blown his voice out with all the shouting.

Speaking of which, he has, I think, one of the finest voices in the business. I remember Greg Kot of the Tribune making that point in his review of the second Pixies album, but the guy doesn't seem to get mentioned much any more when people talk about great rock howlers.

The band was very capable, although I wished the gentlemen at the left and right flanks were capable of something more than octaval harmonies.

I have never seen a guy have more trouble with dropped picks, slipped straps and broken strings over the space of a 90-minute set. He had us cracking up.

We just a smidge of 7 Days .. when responding to a someone yelling out Los Angeles, Frank said something like "I know that city, I've been there" and then almost as if he were singing 7 days, he sort of sang as he spoke "place that I was partly raised". others I'd like to hear besides seven days live off the new one are, When Your poision gets you, In the time of my ruin, When the paint grows darker still...

There was an encore at The Orange Peel in Asheville. Just one song, but hey, it was still great.

Yes I went to pee during Bullet. I know...unforgiveable. But hey my record of 1 minute and 47 seconds of uninterrupted peeing was at the end of his set in Berkeley a few weeks ago and while the relief was orgasmic the pain I endured while standing in line for 25 minutes was enough for this season's Frank Black shows. Plus he almost always plays Bullet so I figured I'd go while he was playing something I've heard half a dozen times live.

I also noticed dancing machine guy. He was between me and the bathroom. He had to move!

I got really excited when I heard EDF was going to tour with him. I just hope they tinker around on some new stuff while on the road. Why don't they roll a keyboard out there for him to play?? I need to hear some more Teenager...Ole Mulholland anyone?

I met the drummer (don't know his name) after the show and he was one of the most genuinely nice and likeable musicians I've ever spoken with.

Here's my list of Frank / Pixies shows I've seen (most in the D.C. area)

1.Frank Black in Va. Beach 1996? (the venue escapes me but he was touring with that Johnny Polatski kid who likes to shove his crotch in young girls faces while on stage)
2.Frank Black at 9:30 Club 1996 (two days later) he was touring for Cult of Ray
3.Frank Black and the Catholics in Santa Barbara 2001 (David Lovering is a huge nerd)
4.Frank Black and the Catholics at Black Cat 2002 (great show. I don't remember Reid Paley but I do remember David Lovering)
5.Pixies at Coachella 2003 (flew across the country to see the Pixies Reunion)
6.Pixies at Constitution Hall 2003
7.Frank Black at the Greek Theatre, Berkeley 2006(opened for Tom Petty...I have to admit Tom Petty puts on a good show. Stevie Nicks showed up too!)
8.Frank Black at the Black Cat two days ago!

Not trying to brag. If anyone was at the Santa Barbara show in 2001 they have to remember the version of Six Sixty Six he played. It was so slow and desperate and he played it without the band...equal to his version on Sunday when he added the gut-wrenching "KILL ME" over and over again!!!

That's it for me.
