maybe it would be good if there was an articles section. i think great that some people (Carl) post lots of articles, but having them in threads can sometimes make them a bit unwieldy, and cause them to lick sac

It is in the planning stages to develop an Article DB - the problem is just the back end work that goes into it is quite time consuming.

Its not really the articles part - its designing a DB that is user friendly, easy to update, won't crash, won't get hacked, etc. We really need some computer people volunteers is what we need, actually...

The problem isn't finding someone who wants to compile the articles. As it happens, Soren is heading up that division and I'm sure Carl would be enlisted as well if he were to ask/be interested. The problem is that we need someone who can write the actual code to sort the database and make it use friendly and all that.
We've asked for help on that many times and nobody who knows how has volunteered. Which leaves just me with the ability and will to do it, but to be honest, most of my FB.Net time these days goes into the podcast. I want this probably as bad as anyone but there just aren't enough hours in the day as it is for the amount of time I put into FB.Net.
Still, I've been thinking this was a great idea and still do, so maybe someone newer to the site that wants to get involved and knows how to code in ASP/MySQL will show themselves.
Incidentally, I've actually already done the database structure and design, now I need a way to enter data, view data, and hopefully submit data to the article admins. This is where I've gotten stuck for time.

I'd certainly be interested in contributing to an articles section. I suppose submitting it is the main problem. Microsoft Office Excel seems like a handy way to submit a load of articles in one go, but I personally find it tricky to use!
I think I better cut down on some of the General Chat links I've been posting, otherwise we may end up with a superhero section! ;)

Or someone who is passionate about 'back end work' as Brian put it.
Now if we could just find someone who fits that description...
I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place

What sort of "back-end work" and "actual code to sort the database" are we talking about. I may not be a 350,000 posts FB.netter, but I am a software programmer. I could do PHP, ASP, whatever you think is necessary. Just not sure of the scale you are talking about. Dean/Brian, fill me in!

i used to be a slave (paid in pounds not whippings, mind) to the spreadsheet many moons back so don't worry about the tricky.
we have over a thousand article/reviews blah de blah links when the timing's right. i'm actually in the process of mocking up a site to display it all until fb.net's ready for it's majesty. |

Here's the scoop. Right now I have a database done in MySQL. There is not much for content at the moment, but it's there. What I need is the ASP side of things (in other words, accessing the DB, grabbing/sorting data, and providing a web interface to it) is this:
A user interface. I've already designed it on paper but I haven't done any coding. The user needs to be able to select from the categories of 'articles' such as reviews, interviews, etc. and find what they're looking for. It needs to be searchable. Hopefully there will also be a section with the latest articles on the front page to make it easy to stay up to date. We want this to be a useful tool for fans looking up press or interviews on certain topics and also for FB to see what people are saying about his latest album or concert. It would also be great to have an easy way for users to submit an article for consideration to our Article Editor, namely FBC.
There also needs to be a good backend. It doesn't have to be too pretty but should make it easy to approve/edit user submissions, add articles and content easily, and obviously needs to be somewhat secure/require a login and password.
Check out our Discopedia for a little bit of a sense of what we're trying to do. I think that the code for that would probably make a good starting point and I can supply that if needed.
Does that help?

This may not be hugely helpful, but from the very first time I visited this site I have wished the articles/interviews from which the front-page Frank quotes are taken were linked right there. I've found many of them on my own, but most people probably don't want to bother.

Someone is/was working on this, but I'm definitely not able to do any web work from my current location/situation. I'm hoping they're still working on it and that we do get it linked like you're saying. hopefully this absence displays how much Brian and I do to keep things running and why it would be nice to have more help. Still, I'm sorry that it's been let slip so extensively and thanks to Tre for basically running everything in our combined absence.
