yesterday, Friday the 13th, I saw for the first time PERE UBU in Paris at Le Nouveau Casino.
Scariest show ever. Greatest performance from david Thomas. Great musician, sexy drummer...
For those who don't know the contemporary Pere Ubu, just imagine the best in terms of noisy music, surrealistic words and amazing presence on stage. A cross-road between the Pixies and sonic Youth far better than those pseudo cool geeks from New York and maybe not as pop as the ones from Boston.
Originally from Cleveland.
Check out their new album "Why I hate women"

A few years ago I caught them in Reno. Only time they've ever been here. I was shocked to see the listing. I had always respected them though I wasn't the big fan or anything. But I had to go. Really strong show with tons of stage presence. Given that they'd been around almost thirty years at that point, the immediacy and power of the show took me by surprised. Their scheduled venue had been shut down for alcohol violations so they played "The Voodoo Lounge", a Goth club, which was a trip for a guy like me. Couldn't have been a hundred people there.

The new album has tremendously impressed me from the very first. I don't know of anyone who has said otherwise, for what that's worth.
Man, I would love to see that show. I've always wanted to check out a movie with a live band playing - The Plaid Tongued Devils have done it before. I'm going to see them in a couple weeks doing the music for a belly dancing show. Quite excited as this is another one of my favourite bands. They did the music for a play a few years back as well. http://www.thedevils.com
Anyway, those of you who have seen Pere Ubu live are definitely greening me. I ache for them to come reasonably close to my hometown.

They are going to be in Chicago, Cleveland and New York sometime this year. Don't know the exact dates.
I'd love to see them live and you are right the new album is very good. |
