Richard Hawley and Guy Garvey join the Pixies!
Supergroup sensation in Tennessee
Richard Hawley and Guy Garvey joined Pixies frontman Frank Black onstage in Tennessee last night (October 8) for a version of the US indie legends' classic 'Cactus'.

The three were all performing with a stellar backing band as part of the annual JD Set gig at the Jack Daniels distillery in Lynchburg, near Nashville, and climaxed the evening with a run through the song, which originally appeared on the Pixies' 1988 album 'Surfer Rosa'. Black and Garvey handled vocal duties, with Hawley adding guitar.

Speaking afterwards to NME.COM, Black said "We all got along great this week so thought we'd do something," while Garvey said singing the song had been "a dream come true".

All three singers performed sets backed by legendary musicians Spooner Oldham, Billy Block, Craig Krampf, David Hood and Duane Jarvis. Garvey, playing without Elbow for the first time, got things underway with a four-song set which included his own group's 'Scattered Black & Whites' and 'Great Expectations' and covers of Bob Dylan's 'Lay Lady Lay' and Elvis Costello's 'Shipbuilding'.

Hawley performed his own 'Wading Through The Water' and 'Just Like The Rain' as well as covers of Hank Williams' 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry', Elvis Presley's first single 'That's All Right (Mama)' and Tommy Tucker's 'Hi-Heel Sneakers'.

Black played 'I Burn Today', 'Headache', 'Johnny Barleycorn' before clmaxing his set with two Pixies classics, 'Hey' and 'Wave Of Mutilation'.

The crowd was made up of competition winners, including those who had entered via NME. The annual event at the distillery marks Jack Daniel's birthday.

What a retarded title. The NME never disappoints.

"Frank Black joins Elbow!"

Ha! Well in fact, the joke of a music mag called "Les Inrockuptibles" did give the news by translating word by word the NME blurb, including the lame title. That's our music mags: same shit as the NME, but one week too late.

But the NME gave a different title - 'Richard Hawley and Guy Garvey join the Pixies!'

Admittedly, still a shit title.

No court should convict you of such a benevolent act. In fact, I think it should be made compulsory for everyone to burn down the NME.

What a load of bullshit the NME is!! I was there, Guy sang Cactus with him and Richard did a little guitar improv. Nothing else, "Join the Pixies" What Bollocks!!!
It was a cool version though,

I don't think they literally meant they joined the Pixies.

Yeah, they're filling in for Joey and Dave on the new album. Amy Winehouse is taken over from Kim.
