One thing is for sure, metal bands have some of the worst names around.

Through the years, metal has provided me two completely different levels of entertainment. When I was a teenager metal was scary, badass, kickass, vital to smashing the face of establishment.

Me, 20 years older, pure comedy.

Clutch - nearly as prolific as our man FB
Kyuss - i don't know if this is really metal...
Karma to Burn - all instrumental and kicks ass
ISIS is pretty good too but a cut below these...

actually i just saw Tool in Philly (Camden) end of Sept. Awesome. Seriously the best concert experience there is, seen them numerous times, seen Frank lots too. I'm in the middle of a sweet run of shows Aug-Nov 1st:

Frank Black (Lancaster)
Tool
FB (Philly)
Chili Peppers
FB (Chicago)

with a Foo Fighters in there too b/c i got free tickets when i thought Frank was opening.

Actually I really like ISIS but missed their opening slot on the Tool tour becuase i was too busy partying in the parking lot with my friends. Reminds me of the time in 1991 when I was too busy partying in the parking lot and missed the opener for U2, a band called the Pixies. (Yes I really did this). Heard the very end of "Head On" and "that was the Pixies, aren't they F***ing incredible" and that was it...Stupid Me!

some nice concerts I´ve got here too in November: Tool, Marc Ribot and Moonchild with Zorn/Patton/Dunn.

does anyone know are Isis going to support Tool on the European tour? they seem like Diet Tool but might be fun to watch live.

i don't think isis are supporting tool in europe.
am very disappointed with the new isis album cause it does sound to me 'tool-lite'
so sad after their previous 3 albums being brilliant and nothing like tool...
why o why? i ask myself.

Mastodon are the UK support for Tool. Dunno about the rest of Europe.

I quite like the new Isis album. But that could just be my blind love of Isis. Just picked up (amongst many many others) the Isis Aerogramme split - yet to listen to it and heard very varied reviews.

Lead me not into temptation; I can find the way myself.

i think the isis / aedrogramme split is very good.
i'm much more impressed with that than the full isis album.

also picked up the isis dvd the other week.
not bad...

and the last one from the Melvins?

I'm loving Blood Mountain. It's a grower. Leviathan is going to always be the album that everyone mentions first, but Blood Mountain certainly isn't far off of it. At this stage I'm not at all sure which one I prefer.

Not heard the new Melvins but I blindly assume it's going to be awesome. The reviews I've heard of the new 2 drummer line up have only been ones of pure adulation.

I got the Dillinger Escape Plan EP with Patton, it´s pretty good, and the second Tomahawk record, Mit Gas. Initial impression is I don´t feel the songs are as strong as the first one but the band are gelling a bit better - the guitarist has stopped trying to wrestle with Patton for melodic lead and fits comfortably around him instead.

It took me more time to appreciate "Mit Gas" than the 1st Tomahawk, and maybe I like the 1st one a little more than "Mit Gas", but that's all great music in there. I hope we won't wait too long for the next one.

godspeed you! black emperor aloso have 2 drummers, 2 basses and 3 guitarists...not metal, mind you, but two drummers do sound damn good.

and what about rothko - they used to be a band of only bass guitars...i think it was 3 of them....

Melvins are my favorite band to go see live. I've seen them about 9 times and every time has been amazing. Dale Crover is worth the price of admission alone, the guy is a monster on the drums. I'm chomping at the bit to go see this new incarnation they got going because Coady is a bad ass drummer as well.

As far as other metal these days I'm afraid I just stick to the "art fag" stuff like Fantomas and things of that ilk. Maybe a little Slayer. Jesus I'm getting old.

On a somewhat less tongue-in-cheek note, here's a classic slice of Metallica:
