Kind of a static set of songs this tour.
Not that they're still not kickass sets of songs.

Since he's got the new band, he's probably pretty limited on what he can play. They do seem a little shorter than usual, however.

Concert review: Frank Black
Jim Abbott | SENTINEL POP MUSIC CRITIC Posted October 14, 2006, 10:55 AM EDT ADVERTISEMENTS
There wasn't much of a crowd for Frank Black's show on Friday at House of Blues, certainly not the throng that one might have expected for a rock god.
Maybe it was the presence of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs across town at Hard Rock Live or the country-flavored material on Black's two recent solo albums. Whatever the reason, the meager turnout, maybe a couple hundred people, wasn't enough to necessitate opening the hall's second floor.
Those faithful were tested early on by the inane humor of Kentucky Prophet, a plus-sized comedian-rapper who did more than 30 minutes of material about having food caught between your teeth and other equally weighty topics.
"Let's get hardcore!'' he shouted before launching into a fluffy falsetto love song about birds. "You can take the prophet out of Kentucky, but you can't take Kentucky out of the prophet," he said at another point. On Friday, just taking him off the stage would have been enough.
Some audience members retreated to the smoker's pmixorch out back, where the speculation was that the sparse turnout might sour the occasionally cantankerous Black, perhaps causing him to cut the show short. There was no need to worry.
When the Pixies frontman took the stage, in a sharp-looking black suit with it dress shirt open at the collar, he launched into the opening "Calistan" with energy and muscle. Backed by the solid, if not too flashy, contributions of lead guitarist Duane Jarvis, bassist Eric Drew Feldman and drummer Billy Block, Black tossed staples such as "Headache" into the mix with material from the new Fast Man Raider Man.
"Raider Man" seemed a tad mannered for its spot in the show's opening minutes, but Black more often gave the new material interesting twists that elevated it from the studio versions. Onstage, "My Terrible Ways" was more of a gutbucket blues that allowed Black's raspy, expressive voice to become lost in the sad tale. Likewise, the twangy "I'm Not Dead (I'm in Pittsburgh)" was the rowdy anchor of the show's pleasing turn toward old-school country.
Black didn't have much to say, aside from his joking promise to toss a beach ball into the small, but enthusiastic crowd at one point. At times, he seemed almost workmanlike as he glanced down at the set list before launching into another song. When the music started, however, he was fully engaged.
Even though he left Pixies favorites such as "Where Is My Mind?" out of the mix, there was an exuberant take on Bryan Ferry's "Re-Make/Re-Model." Otherwise, Black kept the focus in the present tense with songs from the new album and last year's Honeycomb.
The latter album yielded the closing "Sing For Joy," another song that took on new life on stage. Above Block's frisky rhythm, the song lived up to its name, no matter how many people were in the room. |

Great show, no surprises on the setlist which my friend managed to get after the show and have all 4 musicians to sign. Frank talked a little on stage, mostly about the songs. After 2nd song he looked at the setlist and said this next one we forgot to put on the list so we're gonna do it now it's about human sacrifice and went into "Johnny Barleycorn". Later he said this is an execution song and did "All Around The World". After Remake/Remodel he said this is a Bryan Ferry song and a mention of Roxy Music. No leaving the stage encore, he said goodnight took a few seconds then went into "I'll Be Blue", they all removed their instruments took in some applause and finished with "Sing For Joy".
Saw Billy Block in front of the venue before the show but didn't approach him. After the show a group of 2 dozen hungout by the bus waiting for The Man. Eric was first out talked with a few fans, I told him we were gonna see him in St Pete Saturday and he asked how the Salvador Dali museum was and I said great so he said he hopes he has time to go and asked about taxi availability. Duane came out and talked to the fans and posed with them, I didn't talk to him. I saw Billy and asked him to sign the setlist and he replied in a few minutes and went on the bus, after he came out he looked for me to sign and talked to him for a few. I told him you could see he was having a blast up there and he said yes he did and it was good to play the new songs live since he recorded them. He mentioned Levon Helm, Simon Kirke and himself playing on the new stuff and I told him I enjoyed "All Around the World" when they played it. When The Man came out he hung out and posed, chatted and signed for the fans for 5 min, I got a chance to tell him I was glad they played 'Dead Man's Curve" ( awesome to see full band do it, loved the solo version) and we're gonna see the show tommorrow could you play The Water ? , he repied we haven't played that as a band. No Pixies played was great by me, my 14 yr old nephew would've liked to see a few played though. They played 3 songs not on the setlist which I have a picture of to upload. Hope to see a recording out there, didn't see any taper's though.
Great night and we get to do it again in St.Pete.

I saw the show whilst on a family holiday, the timing couldn't have been more perfect. Before any bands played I managed to have a word with a sound technician and got the setlist at the soundboard, I assume it was still written by the band so it's cool. I was sat with my brother most of the night on one of the crate boxes at the side, could see everything perfect. Was a little disappointed that no Pixies songs were played but Frank's solo stuff is just as good on the whole so can't complain. I thought I recognised Billy when he was just walking about (right infront of a table we were at) but I didn't approach him. Kicked myself once I saw him onstage and had to leave on time, so couldn't meet the band. Oh well, hope there's a next time to make up for it. |
