Yes, I'm hoping we get more photos out of this tour, too. Surely there are photos out there to be shared/gallery-ized. I'm glad you're hunting these down, Llama.

Hey i was just wondering...i know the sound guys at the Catalyst are usually pretty cool about soundboard access for taping. If they seem cool with it is it cool with Frank?
Thanks Chris |

Here's the setlist from the Catalyst:
Los Angeles Brackish Boy Holiday Song Raider Man California Bound Humboldt County Massacre Bullet (hell yeah!) The Shrimp Song Fitzgerald The Swimmer Headache Where Is My Mind? Sing For Joy Six Sixty-Six Horrible Day I Burn Today Massif Centale Living on Soul All My Ghosts Dead Man's Curve Nimrod's Son The Water Song Two Reelers I'll Be blue Wave of Mutilation
encore:
Cactus Manitoba
As one would expect, Frank was in excellent form. Apparently his brother is turning forty and they were having some wine backstage. Mazel tov! I took 4 rolls of black & white film, and already have he negs developed. I won't have darkroom access for a while but I'll try to scan some into Photoshop.
Oh, this is my first forum post ever. Hi y'all! |

Having seen Frank (solo/catholics/pixies) somewhere around 30 times, I'm really dissapointed to say that this was the worst I have ever seen him. As an above poster mentioned, it was his brother's birthday and they were drinking wine, this seemed to really effect his performance. He was fucking up left and right, forgetting lyrics or changes from bridge/verse/chorus, slowing things down drastically and being over all very sloppy. There were some incredible moments ("Sing for Joy" in particular, anything from Honeycomb on was really solid with the exception of "Dead Man's Curve", which he seemed to be having a pretty hard time with. Dissapointing, as the last time I saw him DMC was not only the best song of the night, but maybe the best performance I've ever seen him give), but they couldn't reall make up for the overall lazy nature of the show. I'm really not complaining, and I'm not trying to be a killjoy or anything, I had a pretty good time, but someone said he was in excellent form, which he most deffinatley was not.

I must have missed the screw-ups aside from the opening song, where he kinda got...lost at the end when the wine had started kicking in.
But this was my first FB concert + I expected a certain amount of casualness considering the format, so maybe I'm not the best judge of the overall 'quality'. Just hearing him play Bullet (my favorite) was enough for me ^_^. Subjectively speaking, I thought it was wonderful.
He joked a few songs into the set that nearly every one of his songs ends in a minor chord, and warned any who "might be sensitive" to this. It became a running gag throughout the performance, and he would occasionally play alternate ending chords to 'prove' his assertion, then switch back.
Some highlights for me were:
* 'Two Reelers' (something I never thought he'd play with such a setup)
* a chilling screamed chorus on 'Wave of Mutilation'
* a really nice falsetto on 'Massif Central' (better than the one on the album)
* a weird, slowed version of 'Headache'
* a disturbing a capella of 'Six-Sixty-Six', forcing people to really swallow those bizarre apocalyptic Larry Norman lyrics. I always loved Charles for covering this since I shared a rather similar musical "upbrigning" to his and actually heard quite a bit of Larry's stuff when I was a kid.
* Bullet... for obvious reasons.
* all of the Pixies songs were done quite well, IMO.
My only dissapointments were:
* he played nothing from Pistolero, namely 'Billy Radcliffe' and 'So Hard to Make Things Out' which I think would have sounded terrific in such a venue.
* Reid Paley cancelled, and the opening act was pretty ... bad (don't remember the guy's name and don't want to).
I think I'll try to catch him at the Fillmore in November, just to hear what he sounds like with the full band. |

I actually liked that about the performance. That's one of the nice things about performing without a band, you can change things up on the fly if you feel like it. His actual playing didn't seem sloppy at all to me, and if he didn't do the songs exactly the way he does them on record, so what? Maybe he just felt like switching parts around a bit? Not at all uncommon for performers to do.
I guess it's a matter of taste...anyway, sorry you didn't enjoy the show.
Last time I saw Frank was when he played here with the Catholics in April of 2003, and I enjoyed this show as much as the last. |

I'm well aware that changing things is his choice and that's not the problem. I don't expect him to play the songs exactly as they are in the recordings, for example the way he was adding extra bars into the Holiday Song was clearly on purpose and really awesome. There were some really, really great moments in the show. Now, I've seen him play solo accustic probably about ten times (including the first time I saw him), so I'm used to the looser, more intimate, kind of "I'm watching my buddy play songs" atmosphere. However, it seemed from the look on his face that he was really struggling at times to remember how things went, he was singing lyrics out of order or even ommiting them completley and he seemed to not really be sure about some of the chord changes he was making. I really don't want to sound like some over critical asshole, Just giving an honest account of my feelings about the show. Really, one semi-dissapointing show out of the many I've seen isn't bad, but I have come to expect a certain level of quality from Frank Black, especially since he's been playing these songs almost every night for the past few weeks. He's still my favorite ever, and I will of course see him next time he comes (wouldn't dream of missing it), and I'm glad that you guys had a great time (and I want to stress the fact that I by no means had a bad time).
Oh, also I just realised that I probably sound like I'm bragging about seeing him tons of times, which I didn't mean to do. I'm just lucky to live in San Francisco where he seems to play many times a year, and I was trying to give a little background to my experiece so you guys didn't think I was just panning the man. Just seemed like an off show to me.

Okay, here we are with some photos. I have no patience for constantly tweaking my photos to fit the gallery's upload size restrictions, so I'm just going to link to my photobucket FB album: pic 1 pic 2 pic 3 pic 4 pic 5 pic 6
Keep in mind that these were scanned directly from black & white negatives, so they're a bit funky (in an artsy way I hope ) |

You know, Frank said something to that effect..."This must be Santa Cruz, 'cause the stage is so high".
I understand the place used to be a bowling alley. Not that that explains the stage, but it's...interesting. The stage itself wouldn't be so bad, if it wasn't surrounded by the meanest security gorrillas on the planet. |

I think he was making a joke about all the pot smoking that stereotypically goes on in Santa Cruz.

He was supposed to open at the Santa Cruz show, he was billed on all the ads and the guy who replaced him even said that he was replacing Reid Paley. No reason for the cancelation was given though.

This show was totally Santa Cruz outstanding as exactly what I imagined, expected, and received. Headache was especially great maybe because I didn't expect that. This was my first FB Solo and so looked forward to it. My only disapointment was RP not showing. Oh well, thanks Frank for being your fabulous self. I'll see you again soon in West Hollywood with the Mystery Band. I miss the Catholics!
Thanks fish for the great pics!
