No Pixies tunes in the SF, Cafe Du Nord 2nd show. I wonder if it'll happen once or twice this Fall. I guess there are always fans at a FB show that are only familiar with Pixies music, but I love hearing as many live FB solo/catholics tunes as I can. Maybe I shouldn't think of it like that. Maybe I should just see em all as Frank's songs.
Anyone else remember a FB or Catholics show with no Pixies songs?

I believe that, at first, that was the only Pixies song Frank would play.

I assumed they played Gouge Away some too just because it was on the Nadine EP. I don't know for sure though.

Well yeah, they were certainly half a dozen or so Pixies songs in their repertoire by the end, but as was said above, until DITS era, Pixies songs were very few (Wave, Caribou I think?). |

The Holiday Song was a favourite too back in the 90's. |

Yeah, they played many Pixies songs by the time Show Me Your Tears was out. Mr. Grieves, Gouge Away, Where Is My Mind, Nimrod's Son, Cactus, Crackity Jones, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Wave of Mutilation, The Holiday Song, Velouria, Dig for Fire, ...

"Dig for Fire"?
Seriously, or just wishful thinking?

So, am I wrong that Frank Black did not play Pixies songs when touring for the first few Catholics albums? I'm fairly certain that when I saw him 1998 in New Haven there were no Pixies tunes and seem to remember it being a semi-big deal when he did start including a few Pixies songs. |

Strange that the FB & The Catholics did 'Dig'...am I right or wrong, or have Pixies Mk II not played that?! Or possibly only once or twice?

Dig for Fire? I think you're smoking some Canadian maple syrup there my friend...
As far as i know that has not been played since the Pixies stopped performing in the early 90s (if it was even played then). I know Joey said that he would like to try Dig for Fire live, but they hadn't yet, and as far as i know, all the Pixies songs FB and the Cs did live, the Pixies did on the reunion tour.

Hee hee, alright, 'ya caught me. Just checking if anyone actually reads my posts. :) However, smoking maple syrup does sound nice. Maybe just a light drizzle in a cigar...
And no, Darwin, you're right. It was a while and a big deal before/when Pixies songs surfaced. I didn't know he'd played Wave first (anyone have confirmation?) but I do remember the buzz when some Pixies songs came out.

I remember when I first saw Frank post COR, it was in NY May of 1998, before FB&the C's came out in the US, and he was playing some new stuff off of it, so when he goes to start a new song, I think "aw, shucks, this one's beginning sounds just like Wave of Mutilation... oh well..." then sudddenly it IS wave of mutilation and my friends and I just look at each other like "OH NO HE DIDNT!" and of course "HE DOES" and goes on to play a nice UK surf version of Wave. Then later he played the Holiday Song -- not sure if this NY show (at the former Tramps) was the first time or anything, but it was my first time, and it was amazing to see.
Then for the next few years/shows those were the ONLY two Pixies songs he'd play and the novelty sorta wore off and I went back to wanting just catholics/solo songs. |

There were some Catholics shows where no Pixies songs were played.
If anyone here was on the old Abstract Plain mailing list circa 2000, the Madison, Wisconsin show from early in that year (where almost all of the songs on Dog in the Sand were debuted) was MP3'd and posted and there are no Pixies song in that set. |
