So, what to say - it was really perfect. Nice small venue, 700 people, the band in perfect mood, great sound.
Setlist (not in right order, sorry)
Bone Machine Crackity Jones Broken Face Levitate Me Cactus (Dave spelt P-I-X-I-E-S as usual) Gouge Away Gigantic Caribou Dead Subbacultcha (Kim spoilt beggining so after 10 seconds they went into) Hey Subbacultcha (complete) Wave Of Mutilation (fast version) Tame River Euphrates Monkey Gone To Heaven Debaser Mr. Grieves Alec Eiffel U-Mass Planet Of Sound
encore (right order)
Where Is My Mind Nimrod Son (fast fast version) Holiday Song Vamos Here Comes Your Man La La Love You
and now some details. I entered the venue among first people and went straight to first rows. Then waited for nearly an hour and Pixies came on stage beginning with Bone Machine. They were all dressed in black (well, Joey had dark blue jeans and Dave red T-shirt) but they didnt have eyeliners :). Frank also had sunglasses. Frank played his white telecaster, Joey had black Les Paul. During Bone Machine I heard guitars, drums and Frank's voice well but bass and Kim's singing was quite silent, I couldn't hear it well. But during the second Crackity Jones everything sounded great for me. Also at the beginning of the gig I had feeling that Pixies are quite nervous but after first applause they lost their nervousness. Frank waved into audience, Kim said thanked for many times. Then the rest of the gig was simply awesome, crowd was good, Frank looked really cool (especially when he stepped off the microphone and only played the guitar), Joey was smooth, David was savage and I don't what to say about Kim - she was perfect.
Some special moments: Frank's great singing - totally great vocal, from falsettos to screaming (repent, dead, one sip from salty wine, tame, educational,...), between the first and second verse of River Euphrates they played the special passage from B-side version (hope you know what I'm talking about), Kim smoking cigarettes, spoiled beginnings of Subbacultcha and Alec Eiffel (now I know that Pixies aren't robots) and deadly live experiences - for me it were Gouge Away, Alec Eiffel, U-Mass, Caribou and Dead (the rest of songs was also very good but not that great). I can't remember which song they ended the regular set - maybe it was U-Mass but I'm not sure.
When they came for encore, Frank put off his sunglasses and picked up his acoustic guitar and then they played songs I am totally with in love. Only Vamos was a bit short. Joey didn't play the noise, feedback things for long time, Dave didn't throw him his drumstick... On last two songs Joey played some red guitar I've never seen him playing it before. It sounded great. Unfortunately, I am not guitar expert so I can't identify it. Finally, Dave sang chorus in La La Love You as on the album but i was surprised that Joey sang the one "I love you".
I think I had great position for watching the gig. I was feeling like Rockefeller, it looked that Pixies played only for me. I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't play any Bossanova song or some "special" one like Into The White or Winterlong. But these things are only small details. After the gig I felt like I was smashed head on by the giant truck and my shirt was soaked in sweat. And I couldn't drink any beer to feel drunk. Maybe it was the best concert of my life, it's hard to find any comparison now. I'm 200 percent satisfied and very looking forward to Slovakian gig. |

Cool, thanks for the review - I'd lost track of time and forgotten they'd be starting right away over there...
Same old setlist on the downside, but seems like it went over well so who am I to say anything. Again, thanks for posting.

Wow, yeah, I didn't realise the '06 tour had started yet! That red guitar....a Gretsch, maybe? Just a wild guess. I was always pretty sure that Joey sang on La La Love You! Glad you enjoyed the show, Appleworm-and enjoy the Slovakian gig, you lucky man! :)

That red guitar Joey usually plays on HCYM and such like is a Gibson ES 335 isn't it? Think he plays it for 'Is She Weird' too.
Shame there's no UK show this tour. Grrr. |

Yep you're right. He usually stick with it too for Subbacultcha. I don't know if it's still the case, but back around 1991 he did.
Not even a single song off Bossanova? ... Joey talked about a live rendition of Dig For Fire. I think it will not be the case. Obviously, there will be no "new" songs for this brief tour. Too bad. Nevertheless, I'm glad they played Alec Eiffel and Planet Of Sound.
Is Joey shredding some times? |
