I've been reading quite a lot about Scientology recently and just stumbled on this article, an interview with L Ron Hubbard Jr. I personally found it extremely interesting so I just thought I'd throw it out there for you guys to read. Its pretty lengthy, but worth sticking with:

I did a little research on scientology myself last year. I took one of their online "personality tests". Before you even start the "free test" you have to give your name, address, email, and telephone number (you can't go any further till you do this). Then you proceed to answer the stupidest quetions every conceived. The theme seems to be regret; "Have you ever said something that you would later regret?", "Do you ever lay in bed thinking about events of the day?", etc. They seem to rephrase the same question constantly. Some of them are just obvious human nature questions that everyone will answer give the same answer for, "Have you ever been embarrassed?". I've heard that the questions, layout, and phraseology can vary, but i'm not sure if that's true. When you finish the test your shown a chart and given an appointment with your nearest scientology centre (I had the foresight to give all false details, claiming i was living in New Zealand)
You get the feeling that no matter how you score or what you say, your going to have to go for some "auditing".
I came across a brand new copy of Dianetics in a second hand shop for €1, but i pasted on it. Your better off watching this for a quicker alternative:

Yeah I was going to take a personality test myself but I wasn't willing to supply that information. It's a very interesting topic to research, a very sinister organisation of you ask me. The stuff that L. Ron Hubbard Jr says about his father in that interview is really disturbing, especially the bit about the coathanger abortions, although I'm not saying we should necessarily swallow everything Jr feeds us. At first I thought it Scientology was a pretty harmless organisation that had all these wacko beliefs about aliens, ripping off people with more money than sense. But the more I read about it, the more I see it as a dangerous, profit-hungry cult.

I always thought that religion and the stupidity that comes with it would slowly fade away as time progressed, but Scientology just takes this stupidity to the next level. It just furthers my belief that religion is one of the most dangerous, if not the most dangerous thing man has ever conjured.
I was reading what some guy had to say about it in another forum recently. He was a member for about a year, and only stopped when they tried to hook him up to a machine to take some kind of test. |

I agree that religion can be dangerous but I wouldn't even say that Scientology is a religion. Take away the crazy shit about how the earth was created and what you're left with is nothing more than a business.

There is a vast difference between what a religion is and what scientology is and I for one do not think you can make a fair comparison.
But as far as cults go scientology is a pretty messed up effort. I've taken their test (free coffee) and it were quite disturbing.

I think the whole medicinal side of it is perhaps no more stupid than putting crystals all over your body, or any other branch of money-making therapy that doesn’t let medical science get in the way of things. It's the religious side of it that makes it so open to mockery, too. |

To be fair, I dont think the crazy shit beliefs about the earths creation is what we should be worrying about. Its not dangerous as such, just ripe for parody. What is dangerous is the lengths Scientology will go to widen their profit margins/defend scientology against its critics eg fraud, murder etc.

Yeah it is a cult but Scientologists supposedly believe a lot of things that you could draw parallels with other, more 'traditional' religions. Like the stuff they believe about the earths creation and Emperor Xenu.

All I've ever read about scientology has suggested that on the most superficial level there are some comparisons to major religions but only because Hubbard has glazed over a dummies guide to world religion and eastern philosophy, misunderstood everything he's seen and shoved it in with the church of scientology. If you can spare the time this article is quite interesting. It basically discusses how scientology cannot be really classified as a religion as any religious features comprise such a small part of the whole. The cult descriptive is more accurate because of the pseudo medical, business, political, financial and psychological aspects.

Yeah I agree with you, and that article does a good job of showing why Scientology isn't a religion. I was just saying that there are religious aspects to it, even if they are dwarfed by the overall profit making aims of the organisation.

My friends started their own religion, McMoizianism (a combination of their last names). I think they have a couple of prophets picked out (Santa Clause, if I remember correctly).
