Recent 'independant' films? The Squid And The Whale, which I think is out on DVD in the US already...Cache (Hidden).

That's two, anyhow.

I really liked it. Jeff Daniels is great in it....in fact, great performances all around. Cache is a bit of a headscratcher, but good none the less. I'd like to see 36 Quai Des Orfevres, a cop drama starring that film's Daniel Auteuil, and Gerard Depardieu. It got a limited theatrical release here, in fact I just missed it.

Donnie Darko's directer Richard Kelly's new film Southland Tales is coming out soon:

Sorry, I'm supposed to be recommending rentals here!!

I second the Squid and the Whale reccomendation. Saw it for the second time last night, and liked it even better.

If you're browsing Blockbuster looking for recent indie flicks, let me tell you not to waste your time on Thumbsucker. I did not care for it.

Everything is Illuminated was pretty good. But if you get the chance, read the book over the movie. Both were enjoyable however.

Good work, Sir Rock. I too disliked Thumbsucker, and i also disliked Everything is Illuminated, but because i loved the book so much and was horrified of how they changed the ending.

"Munchies" (a classic) or your threads title "Summer Rental". John Candy was the man.

SQUID AND THE WHALE was disappointing to me

his earlier films are way better: KICKING AND SCREAMING, MR. JEALOUSY. check either of those two out

Homers, yeah, Secretary was good. I bought it ages ago in a sale, and I still haven't watched it, although I rented it before so I have actually seen it. Heywood, is Munchies any good or just the Gremlins rip-off it looks like?! :)

BTW, some info about the release of Southland Tales:

The Lost Skeleton Of Cadavra is an awesome movie. I think it said somewhere if you like Low Budget Time Machine you'll like Cadavra. It's a b/w movie making fun of old sci-fi movies. They act really akward like they don't know what to say. "My wife does not like to talk about a store." It's pretty rare, but we requested it at Hollywood video and it came in a few months later.

Oh, yeah I forgot. The best movie I've ever seen (by best I mean so bad it's great) is this movie we bought because it looked really stupid. It's called Ghost Club. I don't even know where to begin. First of all there's this really annoying kid, that's supposed to be smart, but he obviously had a voice-over, for pretty much every line he did. And I think it was a woman doing the voice-over.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0377066/

And this other movie Pocket Ninjas (aka "Triple Dragon") which I think was rated the #1 worst movie on imdb.com. It's so bad it's hardly even funny at all. It's like an hour and a half long, and 3/4 of the movie are "training" scenes involving three people punching and kicking the air. It's the most boring movie I've ever seen.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107838/

I don't recommend it, unless you have money to spare. I do recommend Ghost Club, though. Hilarious.

I never Summer Rental the whole way through, but there's something about John Candy movies that you've gotta love, he's just so affable and naturally funny. Uncle Buck and The Great Outdoors are two other guilty pleasures.
