I don't, but I can tell you about my experience with the Boss VF-1, which has similar sounds to the old GT-6. I think it is a wonderful toy!

I'm personally not a fan of any kind of pedal. In my experience they don't sound as powerful as the amp distortion when used on the clean channel, and just create a lot of noise when used on the distortion channel.

There are more to pedals than just distortion.

Depends on what sound you want really. I prefer my RAT pedal going into my tube Marshall's clean channel infinately more than the amp's own distortion channel.

Multifx pedals like that Boss unit are great if you want a huge range of sounds and presets available at your feet, and aren't totally fussy about the sort of flexibility individual pedals would offer.

I'd like toget a RAT. I believe Sonic Youth use them.

I don't have any pedals at the moment, the ones I had broke/got lost. I do like going straight through the amp, but there are a lot of cool sounds you can get with pedals, that can be insipiring in itself.

LOADSA guys use 'em- Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), King Buzzo (Melvins) to name a few.

I'd recommend trying one with a similar setup to your own, they're not everyones cup of tea, but I adore mine. Best distortion pedal I've ever used, none of that annoying low end loss like most distortion pedals suffer from. And a super quick and easy mod I found online tames the fizzy gain a bit and makes the pedal take on a much warmer tone, great stuff.

Needless to say, they (like most dirt pedals) sound infinately better through a tube amp, but still sounds better than most on solidstate amps. Takes a huge flying piss on the Boss distortion pedals (ACK!).

I was thinking about starting a thread about distortion pedals, amps, units, qualities.

The VF-1 and GT-6, and I assume the GT-8, have "models" of all of those Boss distortion pedals as well as some decent overdriven amplifiers.

My Garnet Guillotine, however, is easily the best distortion unit in history!

Does it have more gain than the clips on that site or is that the max gain?

I think FB used a RAT on the reunion tour.

Speaking up for Boss, though, my OD3 is excellent.

Don't buy multi-effects. Instead, buy one distortion and learn how to make it sound like 100 different things. That's what true creativity is.

Depending on my mood, I use an Ibanez Tube Screamer or a Rat or both if I'm feeling obnoxious. I've had the Rat for about ten years & it's still holding up. They sound great.

I had read up a lot on the Tube Screamer & when I saw Bill Frisell using one, that sold me. Actually, when I saw Frank last month, I saw that Duane Jarvis uses one too.

No and yes, what you heard may fool you, there is little noise and a whole lot of distortion. It's easier to understand with chords:

http://members.shaw.ca/anyuser9000/gg.mp3

With the unit off
At 3
At 6
At 6 (maj7 7#9 dim 7b9)
At 8 (9 7#9)
At 10
At 10 with pull brite. This clarifies what has been going on.

The demos at the Garnet Amps site were probably done by (excellent) Blues guitarist Billy Joe Green, I think the volume on the guitar was set low. I also think that there is oodles of distortion there, so much that it sounds nice and round.

I tend to just use the pre-gain on the Marshall for crunch. The Boss pedal is nice for what it does, but to really go over the top I'll use one of these,

I don't have accesss to the net but a few days a week and have just gotten around to checking my net posts.
thanks for taking the time to post that clip and demostration! Sounds great and retains the characteristic garnet vibe I look for in my tone. That bright switch added a whole other dimension to the tone that illustrates the guillotines tonal versatility and variety. I currently have 2 garnet amps which I have used for 10+ years and have always been a fan of the man himself so I've been oggling that guillotine with curiousity for a while.

thanks again!

You're welcome. Which amps do you have? I would love to find a Revolution III head. Although I don't own any Garnet amps currently I do have a Reverb Unit and I have owned a BTO Slave (possibly the one on the cover of Gar's book with the tone controls) and an Enforcer which was beautiful for playing Jazz on my Epiphone.

I was told that Gar may now be fully retired.

Glad to see that a thread I started in June is alive, kicking, and way off topic.
