We’ll do this half a CD at a time. Starting with whatever information we have on forum already about the album and then adding to it with some definitions and references. Quotes will, I imagine, be few and far between but if they’re about then in the name of all things good and glittery we will find them!!!
I don’t know how a whole bunch of stuff at a time will go (as usually we go song by song) but we’ll give it our best shot, eh? Eh? I thought so.
I ***KNOW*** it isn't out yet before you start but if you know the format of the db you'll know picking over lyrics can throw us some gems, definitions.... any information is useful.
Raider man All my life I've been digging Polish black coal It wasn't much but you know I could play that role They laid me off and so I kept my pail And now I wade in bushes down by the rail
Raider man, got no choice about it Raider man, jumpin' up there on it Raider man, gonna' take a little bit now
They hired me back and traded my pail for a stick And now I chase the ones with a pail and a brick
Raider man, got no choice about it Raider man, jumpin' up there on it Raider man, gonna' take a little bit now
Raider man, got no choice about it Raider man, jumpin' up there on it Raider man, gonna' take a little bit now
I chased my cousin, it wasn't no big deal I losy my legs when I slipped beneath the coal train wheel My cousin tries to put something in my bowl And now I wish I never left that darkened hole.
Raider man, got no choice about it Raider man, jumpin' up there on it Raider man, gonna' take a little bit now
"That provides a nice backdrop to this tale of a Polish coal miner who lost his legs to the coal train, He ends up being a security man after he gets fired by the coal company, chasing the Raiderman away" - FM/RM Press release from cooking vinyl
Tiven’s September 2005 There was just one track cut on this lazy, late summer night at the producer’s house, but Black singles it out as his favourite in this collection. It captures him with Duane Jarvis on acoustic guitars, doing “Raiderman” with accompaniment from a chorus of cicadas chirping in the backyard and Tiven’s dog Sammy, who makes himself heard right before he second verse.
End Of Summer A house is made of mortar and wood Yet sinks in the mud to decay A house becomes a ghost in the heart Of those who have gone far away
A town is born of silver and stone And beaten to sand by the tide A town becomes a mark on the soul Of those who will cross that divide
Come unto me, we'll lie in the grass We won't be ashamed, summer will pass Felling a tree to hide from the wild Weaving the reeds to cover our child
Save me, the ghost in my heart Save me, the mark on my soul Save me, the end of the summer Save me, I'm not feeling whole
A clan is made of marriage and blood The journey is our only prize And if a clan is rent into two You still have her lips and his eyes
Save me, the ghost in my heart Save me, the mark on my soul Save me, the end of the summer Save me, I'm not feeling whole
This place is made of water and rock Yet burns in the pyre of the stars My love for you is stronger than that I'll find you wherever you are
A house is made of wood The town is born of stone A clan is made of blood
Dog Sleep (frank black/reid paley) You took me down into the valley I didn't know you were so deep You left me standing at the river every time
Now I'm getting that dog sleep But I could not leave I'm getting that dog sleep But I could not leave
Every day I look around Then I put my head back down
I'm living on dog sleep But I could not leave
I'm living on horse meat But I could not win I'm living on horse meat But I could not win
Every day I'm back in town Then I'm walking 'round and 'round
I'm living on horse meat But I could not win
Little bird, come shine to meet me Come out from beneath your wing Let me hear you sing
Turn around, light up the morning Little bird, where have you been Every little thing, Let me hear you sing
When The Pain Grows Darker Still
I am just a weary singer Moving through this world of ills Hark the choir of predecessors When the paint grows darker still
Once I found a golden trumpet In the mash of an old landfill Now I play for the spirits When the paint grows darker still
Winter waited in my garden When the sun did refuse to shine Honeybees all in a slumber Skies filled up the sea Falling down on me
Winter waited in my garden When the sun did refuse to shine Honeybees are in a slumber Skies filled up the sea Falling down on me
See his eyes turn to stained glass Head to toe in a black roadkill Here I am for your judgement When the paint grows darker still
I'm Not Dead (I'm In Pittsburgh) (frank black/reid paley) I don't want you to worry, I'm okay Just didn't want you seeing me this way We tried to talk about it but we didn't understand We never really talked much anyway
I finally found a place to call my own A place where all good sinners can get stoned I'll keep my holy vision, you keep your stupid pride You said I couldn't make it on my own
But I'm not dead (I'm in Pittsburgh) And now I can't get out of town But I'm not dead (I'm in Pittsburgh) They've got me all strung, come cut me down
Like the weeds in all the cracks All my memories come back Like some Alleghenny smack in the face
It's all just one big monkey house to me Just living ain't the same as being free Don't stop and think about it It'll only make you sad Come put me out of my misery
'Cause I'm not dead (I'm in Pittsburgh) Where a man can loes his mind I'm not dead (I'm in Pittsburgh) They've got me suited up for crazy time
I'm not dead (I'm in Pittsburgh) And now I can't get out of town Hey I'm not dead (I'm in Pittsburgh)
Golden Shore (frank black/reid paley)
So long I've been abiding in dark before the dawn Come a time to even up the score You can meet me in the morning I'll drink you in like wine I ain't never gonna' see you anymore
Anymore, anymore I ain't never gonna' be here anymore You can meet me in the morning I'll drink you in like wine I ain't never gonna' see you anymore
You know that time's a wasting The sun is very high I need to find a way to heaven's door You can hear me when you're sleeping I'll be whistling in the wind I'll see you on that distant golden shore
Golden shore, golden shore I'll see you on that distant golden shore Can you hear me when you're sleeping I'll be whistling in the wind I'll see you on that distant golden shore

Raider Man - Nothing, but I wonder if it is a true story. Sounds like it is. It being FB's fav track from FMRM explains its inclusion in the title, but I wonder if there's something more. I actually wonder if the fast/raider is a reference to the fusing of more eclectic FB that we know and love with the Black-on-Blonde era FB. Perhaps reading too much into it, but Fast man could refer to the more upbeat tone and Raider man to him raiding the classic roots/rock & roll troves for these two albums.
End of Summer - This one was, I believe, adapted from a classical song. I seem to remember him saying so in the King Holds Court thread in response to Derek mentioning tabbing FM/RM. Which song? I don't remember. But it's a start...
Off topic, but I really love this verse:
A town is born of silver and stone And beaten to sand by the tide A town becomes a mark on the soul Of those who will cross that divide
The whole idea of entropy (nature's tendancy towards disorder) leaving a lasting mark if only in our minds/souls is, well, I just like it.
Dog Sleep Is this an FB-coined term or does it have some significance? I've not heard the expression before.
When the Paint Grows Darker Still Has FB given up on Jainism? Is there a relation to this song even? Doesn't paint fade and not grow darker? What does the title mean?
I'm Not Dead No idea other than I had someone ask me if I thought there was a tip of the hat to Dan Stuart (Green on Red) in this song. I'm not familiar enough with him to know.
Golden Shore It's worth noting that Knocking on Heaven's Door, Meet Me in the Morning, and Whistling in the Wind are all Dylan songs. Also, "I'll see you on God's golden shore." is a line from an old folk song called, yes, "A Man of Constant Sorrow" that Dylan played and reworked. As the closer, I wonder if it is meant to be a final tip of the hat to Dylan for the inspiration to do these two Nashville albums, or if it is rather prophetic, a lead in to the future of FB's career and his ambitions to be like Dylan.
So there's a little analysis/thoughts to hopefully get the ball rolling.

I suspect as much, but having not heard it used, I'm not sure...

In his book Les Paradis artificiels, the French poet Charles Baudelaire says, "Quel est l'homme nerveux qui ne connaît pas ce sommeil de chien, comme dit la langue anglaise dans son elliptique énergie?"
Quick translation: "Which nervous man doesn't know that dog sleep, as English says in its elliptic energy?"

kitty thanks so much for doing all this. it just makes fmrm all that extra special.
thanks Dean for your your insights.
I really like the lyrics ALOT. They flow so well and are really cool to listen to. But like Frank lyrics can be, most FM/RM lyrics seem cryptic to me. I thought Honeycomb and his recent albs had lyrics that seemed easier to interpret. For example, it was pretty easy to tell that Violet was a love song for the one and only Violet and Strange Goodbye was about his amicable divorce with Jean.
I really would like to hear more about people’s interpretations. I am sure the lyrics are significant to Frank because he wrote them, but they most are mysterious and have no apparent meaning to me.
That can be a really good thing too. I had years of fun of tying to interpret Pixies lyrics, some I was on the money with and others I was completely off but I guess what I am saying is it’s always fun to interpret Frank’s lyrics. And eventually, he’ll probably spill the beans or even make up a funny meaning in an interview years down the road.
But is it just me or does FM/RM seem to fit so closely with Honeycomb? I don’t know if this was intentional but they sound like musical siblings. Honeycomb just seems more upbeat in terms of mood and FM/RM seems more meditative and melancholy?
Anyway I am really curious to hear your interpretations. Thanks.

I kind of thought that "Dog Sleep" was a play on "dog tired" (a phrase Frank uses in "Atom In My Heart"). Maybe not, though.
"When The Paint Grows Darker Still" could possibly be a reference to the children's music book standard "When The Saints Go Marching In." According to this, that song includes the lyrics, "I am just a weary traveller, travelling through this world of woe," which is quite similar to the beginning of the Frank song. And, of course, "paint" rhymes with "saint," and there are the same number of syllables in the two titles.
"If you doze much longer, then life turns to dreaming. If you doze much longer, then dreams turn to nightmares." |

Hmm, very interesting VoVat. I actually didn't know that When the Saints had verses. I'd blush if I were capable.

Actually, I didn't either. But the opening line sounded familiar, so I did a Google search for the words "I am just a weary," and that's the best match I could come up with.
