"My records are unsuccessful because people's tastes are lame." - Frank Black
I read this quote on the main page and although I agree that of course many peoples, make that most peoples musical tastes are quite lame, If Frank's records are unsuccessful, it's mainly because no one has ever heard of him. I have never talked to anyone in person, who knew who Frank was before I gave them a listen and only a few people I have talked to have even heard of the pixies FOR CHRIST'S SAKE. They have however, always enjoyed his music after I have showed them. That's why I like talking to you guys because you understand the musical genius. I don't know where I'm going with this. Just a thought. |

It's probably not that people's tastes are lame but, as you say, because people just haven't heard of him. And also as you've said, when people do hear him they like his stuff, so it seems the main problem is that no-one knows who the hell he is and that's why his records are 'unsuccesful'.

Well, it's a cause and effect thing I suppose.
If people had better taste, then the music that made money wouldn't be on the radio or, for that matter, produced, or even called music. If there was good music on the radio, there would assuredly be plenty of Frank. People, then, would have heard of him.
So I'm not sure that he hasn't gotten at the root of the problem. :)

That statement is gospel truth. However, I dont really agree with your view that its just that people haven't heard Frank because I've tried to get loads of people listening to him in the past but with little success. The reason he isnt successfull is that peoples tastes are lame. Then again, would you really like it if peoples tastes weren't lame and Frank was commercially successfull? Idiots buying his records and him playing to football stadiums U2 style? I think it would take away some of the fun of being a Frank fan.

i think Frank is being kind of humble too. i mean, it depends on what standard you guage "successful". and also, what he deems successful. but he's managed to make a living off of his records, and some of them have done really well. it's sad when you see good bands break up because they can't even make a living (Grandaddy, Beulah)..
luckily that's not the case with Frank

I know what you mean in saying that it wouldn't be the same if Frank was a radio played success. That would just be weird concidering the radios don't love music for music. I just have a habit of showing amazing music that I discover to my band and friends and they all bought his records the next day. |

You're right dj, succinctly. It's funny to wonder whether one would actually like it if everyone were to know and love Frank. I mean, it's easy to want everybody to have full bellies and roofs over head, but fulfilled frontal lobes? Balanced brain stems? We don't want to go there.

I think there is more than stupidity and market demand involved, I think there is a conspiracy to keep music as disposable as possible because you can severely date a cause by associating it with a shit tune, like We Are the World.

If Frank Black's records are unsuccessful, then I think it's because people are lazy. Then I think it would be true for almost all indpendent music artists. I don't blame the people though. I blame radio and TV.
I don't know if people's tastes are lame, but I think most people are going to like what they hear on the radio and TV no matter how good it is or how lame it is. It easy to like the stuff you hear everyday without working hard to hear it. You learn the words, the music, you hear it again, you start to dig it. It's hard to spend free time looking up new bands or visiting record shops or even listening to a complete record to hear some of those other songs you never listen to. Going to a show to hear a band that you've never heard before because it might be good, then randomly picking a record at the merch table for $10 in the hopes that you like it takes effort and money. And downloading samples from a band's website, or learning their discography, or chiming in on a message board to learn what record fans would recommend you purchase first takes even more work. It's so much easier to go back and listen to what you already know.

Uh. Radiohead and Arcade Fire are your examples of dreck? Give me a break. There's plenty out there that is offensive, and while you may not like either of those bands, at least they're indie and still making music as opposed to being poster-boys/pinup girls fronting a corporate music machine ala the Britney Spears, etc of this world...

at least they're indie.... lolz.
as for britney spears, SOMEONE is still writing the songs, who cares who performs them. the fact is most of her songs suck, just as a lot of indie bands' music sucks.

Ooh. Lol with a 'z'. Finally.
I completely disagree with you. The fact that she has no part in her 'music' to me and is only a hot body to sell it to the masses (you could argue she sings on it, but I'd argue computers do that for her) is completely different than someone out there who is actually involved in making art and something meaningful. The fact that you don't like one piece of art vs another is subjective. The fact that you're comparing art to paint by numbers is lolz-worthy.

paint by numbers? i find it humourous that you think some sort of machine is out there writing songs for britney spears, or that indie bands are immune from writing dull songs
almost lolz worthy.

I think that at a certain point you must, in a discussion of any pop star, seperate the 'song' from the 'performer.' For instance, i think that "Toxic" by Ms. Spears is a great pop song - it is well produced with a good beat, a hook that sticks in your head for hours and is sung well enough. That being said, if anyone with a decent female voice in that range sang it, it would be good - it has nothing to do with Ms. Spears' inflection, style or treatment of the song. So, in that case - performance eh, song good.
I never really understood why 'rock' fans get so mad at pop stars doing well* - as if it somehow poorly affects people like Frank Black or Pavement or Radiohead. It is a totally different audience - i doubt many people will walk into a store this fall and debate the new Justin Timberlake record and the new Thom Yorke (i will, but i have a soft spot for Timberlake's first solo record). What i get more angry about is shit bands like Creed and Limp Bizkit and Nickelback (sorry Dean!) taking up 'rock' radio with their terribly lame version of rock and roll.
*I understand the ethics of being pissed off at a talentless person making money while Chris Whitley dies almost penniless, but MTV is the place for Spears, just as your local modern rock station should be the place for the Arcade Fire - and it is the fault of schlock rock bands, not pop stars that it isn't so. Of course this doesn't apply to me, because New York City and the surrounding metro area don't have a modern rock station anymore.

I get angry at myself for thinking this will change, despite generations of evidence to the contrary. Given that idiots will continue to outbreed morons like us, what's surprising is that anybody's left to care about the quality of pop music.
p.s. What I like about Britney (well, one of things I like) is the unabashed self-enjoyment she conveys with her facial expression in that Letterman image from Carl. Contrast that with the wiser but world-weary wit on Dave's face. Her fun is visceral, his derivative.
