Never heard anyone express their undying love for this song on the forum, but I have to say its up there in my top ten/fifteen. Lyrically its magic, but what I love about it is the way it just rocks so hard for like 2 minutes, and then its over, bam! You dont know what hit you. It reminds me of The Snake in that respect. I just put Skeleton Man on for the first time in a while, and I'd forgotten how infectious it was, I soon found myself bouncing on my bed screaming and playing air guitar. What a badass song. What do you guys think?

I'm a skeleton and I'm with you. I never understood why this song was so hated here... It's definitely in my top 5 Pistolero songs. |

Also affirming my love for said song and perplexion at it so often being villified.
Then again, I never thought much of Jet Black River either, didn't dislike, didn't love, just didn't notice. I not only realized that it's a great, great, great song, but also that it is exceedingly short. I listened to it last week like 40 times. Still making discoveries after all these years. :)

It is a good song. I said this before, but this and Johnny Barleycorn seem to have a kind of Children Of The Corn kind of theme going, sort of a SOuthern American gothic thing!

I used to listen to Pistolero so much, I love it. SM is definitely in the top 5 on that album. The first couple of seconds of the solo sound so awesome. Listen to it. |

"Skeleton Man" is awesome. But then, songs about skeletons often are.

It's one of the few great songs on an otherwise very bad record. I never fully loved it until I heard it live though. One of the Catholics' fave live songs I guess, they played it at every other gig, and with reason.

Still remember the first time I heard Skeleton Man. Gripping. Just as I similarly loved Jet Black River from the first, but I definitely know what you mean CoF about refining seemingly spent ore.
But Denis, whatcha sayin' about Black Letter Days? Definitely in my top five, maybe four, FB albums, FWIW. Then again, I recall your initial reaction to Pistolero, you poor boy. Then again again, you're a man of strong opinion, with which I can identify, poor boys though we may be.

Touch my skeleton hand? That just kicks ass. It's like, "Hey, dude. I'm a frikkin' skeleton. Deal with it."
Pistolero is a great hard rock record. |

I think you're confused. Skeleton Man is on Pistolero, which is the one I don't like. Black Letter Days is in my FB top 3.

I used to really hate this song. I just listened to Pistolero for the first time in a while and I can't figure out why. It's a great song, as is the album. There's not a dull moment on the album, and solid production all the way through.

Or better yet, put it as a bonus track on the [hopefully] forthcoming cd release of the b-sides comp!

There's an awesome peel session version floating around (the same session where they played "everybody's wrong"). You should try to check it out if you haven't heard it, guy in a rover. Or maybe ask the podcast dudes, I'm sure they must know it. |

Yeah, it's not exactly a high quality standalone release, true. But it's likely the most doable.

the pistolero version is pretty good. we tried. no one's fault but my own. the original version (instrumental) was recorded during or just after the first frank black album. it was really great. always enjoyed playing this one. some people don't like this one. anyhow. glad you like it.
frankie dude
Like it! I love it! Seriously though its a cool track, and it would be cool to hear this other version if one exists. If not, you could always play it next time you come to the UK.

Oh, I love the SKELETON MAN! When I was a child, there was a really bad, but great TV show I loved called SPACE: 1999 (which I'm sure many recall). I had an lp record of "4 Adventure Stories" put out by Peter Pan/Power Records of SPACE: 1999 stories...these included music, voiced dialogue, sound effects, etc. In one of the stories, a mutated man at the end aged rapidly until he became "a shrunken, dripping corpse" (such visuals for children!), and a main character, Helena, was seized by this corpses grasp. The narration went, word for word, "...and in his skeleton-of-a-hand was Helena's hand!"
This is what flashes through my mind whenever I hear Frank twangin' out the great song of SKELETON MAN. Hold my skeleton hand!

Thanks fbc. That version is pretty darn cool but after a few listens I've decided I still prefer the Pistolero version cos its faster and rocks harder! 'Ppreciate the upload nevertheless!

I never really appreciated Skeleton Man until I was standing about three feet away from Frank as he performed it. Needless to say, I was blown away by it. Since then it's been a firm favourite. When the guitar plays the chords Eb Bb F, it sends shivers down my spine every time. Thanks for this one Frank!
