okay, work with me here people. my only problem with his orange/yellow/debut album is that the cymbals(i'm looking at you hi-hat) seem way sloppy in the mix. that being said it's his best album. followed by teenager. you know, i hate to say it, because it seems like by picking his first solo albums as his best implies that the quality falls off with age, but not the case! those albums are simply his best. will i get stoned for suggesting that after cult of ray there was a considerable shift. one that involved emotional, personal sounding lyrics, and yes, the live to two track aesthetic. it was a very aprubt shift and it was a shock to this frank fanatic. okay, bye. |

um........sometimes people get old and start to suck. like when paul maccartney got lame real fast. but neil young's stuff in the 90's was better than his stuff in the 80's. i just feel as though i've betrayed mr. black by liking his first two albums better than anything else. i know he stays up at night scrolling through these threads and it eats him up inside. |

Just now I feel bad for ranking Honeycomb last because, as is my wont, today I again used my car errands to hear it through. This time I played in on "random", skipping only Violet and Dark End, and it truly is wonderful that Frank is where he has been recently. Really offers an extension of the catalog. I do find that on a couple songs the vocals are too "bright" (Sunday Sunny), causing me to decrease the volume, but otherwise it is totally our Frank. I would offer titles but suffice to say half the songs would be listed as simply entrancing.

Sorry that just means 'self-titled' (ie, the orange album). |

a = quality falls with age b = first solo albums are his best
a --> b (a implies b, i.e. if a is true then b is true)
he is pointing out that the above proposition is NOT that same as
a <--> b (b is true if and only if a is true)
thus b can be true even if a is not.

Agree. Definitely Frank's most underrated album. I can sort of understand that some people don't enjoy CoR (though I love it myself), but how one could not recognize the unsurpassable brilliance of BLD is beyond me. BLD is Frank's "Exile on Main Street" to me. Same number of tracks, same awesomeness, same under-recognition. In 20 years this will be considered as the best record of the 00's (just like TOTY was for the 90s).
Denis
I love Guitar Wolf from the Erath!
I found that with BLD, there was a period of about a week when I was blindly in love with it: I was convinced that this was an absolute masterpiece, and I'm not sure any of his other solo albums have hit its giddy heights. However, this has since descended into petty hatred. I'm not sure whether that makes it a great album or a terrible album, because what I love about FB albums is that you can constantly go back to songs and they sound as fresh and interesting as ever (COR especially comes to mind.) With what I consider his worst albums (BLD, H, DW) that just isn't there, and I have to forcibly restrain myself from skipping. |

BADABADABADAAA!!!!!!
So here are the results, an average of everyones submissions/point awarding. I fiddled around a little bit due to the reluctance of some users to place Franks albums in any kind of hierachy and also the inclusion of b-sides/rarities threw a couple of spanners in the works but overall I would say it was a fair measure. Obviously it isnt some sort of scientific measure of how good the albums are, but it was a fun idea nevertheless. The averages came out as follows:
1. Teenager of the Year (8.02 points) 2. Dog in the Sand (6.94) 3. Frank Black (5.54) 4. Black Letter Days (5.05) 5. Pistolero (4.68) 6. Frank Black and the Catholics (4.65) 7. Show Me Your Tears (4.60) 8. Devils Workshop (3.57) 9. Cult of Ray (3.54) 10. Honeycomb (2.42)
Overall I dont have any gripes, I would say it was fairly representatives of peoples tastes, although I personally was dissapointed to see Show Me Your Tears so low down. It was interesting to see that while Teenager is almost everybodys favourite (bar one or two) with nobody placing it in their bottom 4, It was the only stand out album in this respect. All the other albums ratings were all over the place and were rated completely different people eg they were appearing at the top of some peoples lists and at the bottom of others. With regards Honeycomb, its not one of my personal favourites, but I think in time people will grow to love it more, and with retrospect it will become more and more respected, as albums often do.

The last few don't really belong in the company of these "Top 9":
01. DitS (God listened to this one while resting on day 7) 02. BLD 03. Pistolero 04. TotY 05. FB&tCs 06. tCoR 07. DW 08. SSMVGD 09. FB (eponymous)
...
15. SMYT
...
86. Honeycomb

I felt really guilty today for ranking those albums 7-10. I know some of them have to be 7-10, but it just don't seem right. |

1) Pistolero 2) TOTY 3) FB& The C's 4) Frank Black 5) DITS 6) The Man Who Was Too Drunk - B-Sides/Oddballs (especially the stuff with Teenage Fanclub) 7) SSMVGD 8) Honeycomb 9) Cult Of Ray 10) Black Letter Days 11) SMYT 12) Devil's Workshop (I just can't get into it for some reason)
FMRM...??? I like it - It might sneak into the top 5
One More Road / Snake Oil - Haven't had a chance to really listen to these.
Honerable mention: You Aint Me - A Frank Black Tribute - "1826" by Parchment Farm. I love the original version to death, but I have the Parchment Farm version on a bunch of playlists. Vive la FrankBlack.net tribute albums!
