Listening to Fast Man/Raider Man and being a bit sentimental, I just want to express my appreciation to the man who has single-handedly changed music as we know it. Period.
I'm 32. I've been a fan since 1993, when I of course heard the yellow one for the first time. At first it sounded a bit weird, like nothing I'd heard before, but after a few listens I came to realize what kind of genius this man was. The explosive sense of melody, while simultaneously exploring completely new territories, blew me away.
And then there was Teenager of the Year. My god, what an experience. I was on a graduation trip in Portugal in June of 1994, when I stumbled upon a brand new copy in a small record store in Algarve. I listened to it literally hundreds of times for the rest of the trip. It was like a religious experience. Music had never made me feel that way before.
Of course he's had his ups and downs since then, but even when he's not at his best, he's a hundred times better than most artists out there. He's shown his immense talent by expanding into totally new styles -- his more country-flavored stuff is good in a totally different way than the experimental stuff. Just confirms his musical genius.
The new one is great. Most of it rivals his greatest work. I find it amazing that this unbelievable creative spark is still there, as is evident in songs like "Johnny Barleycorn", "Fast Man" and "Fitzgerald".
And I'm really looking forward to his next one, that he's making with Eric Drew Feldman. I hope it will be in the vein of "Johnny Barleycorn" (maybe it's just the brass that reminds me of the yellow one).
I feel like I know the man. Of course I don't at all -- only met him once in the mid-nineties -- but we've "been through a lot together".
So, hail to the man! May he and his family have a happy and healthy life! May he make music for many years to come!

Hello Cartland, I'm 32 as well, and feel much the same as you described. I've been a fan since 1989, when Doolittle came out. One of my first serious concert experiences was when the Pixies played in Miami in 1991. I don't post on or check the boards that often, but I still consider myself an ardent fan. |

Hey there people. Thanks.
Well, I'm not exactly new to the forum; been lurking around for years. I think I'm actually member #50 or something. I don't post a lot (is that an understatement?), but I monitor the discussion frequently, both the Frank Black related stuff and the General Chat. Some of you may remember my contribution to the tribute album back in the days; a cover of "Superabound".
This whole community is great - a group of musically like-minded people, most of whom are highly intelligent.
