so, what are your favourite records ? i mean from the point of a record as a whole thing, not just because there good songs on it you like. records, where the overall impression is not "collection of damn' good songs", but where your first thought is "woah, now this is a good record where everything fits together". there don't even have to be really spectacular songs on it, but where the sum of the songs is ways more than the collection of the songs. where it doesn't make sense to interrupt listening.

i would go for

dinosaur jr. - green mind
the cure - boys don't cry
pink floyd - animals

no FB in it. but frank black & the catholics-self titled would be closest.

Hmmm, I'd have to think about this. There are a lot of great songs you kind of have to be in the right mood to enjoy...I'm a compulsive track-skipper!

Fields of the Nephilim - The Nephilim
Big Country - The Crossing
Prince - Around the World in a Day
Radiohead - The Bends

funny, three from the 80's and one the 90's. Doolittle might fit in there too. Wonder why the 00's haven't produced such an album for me.

man, i don't know any of all those records or almost none of the bands. i think my musical range is rather limited...

but i was thinking to include l. cohens "i'm your man" into these lists. but i'm not sure. i think it is great album because the songs are so great. somehow, there is more a song feeling than an album feeling to this. difficult...

I'd go for:

(What's the Story) Morning Glory? - Oasis
Blue Is The Colour - The Beautiful South
Bossanova - Pixies

Doves 'Lost Souls' is a very good album too.

I'd like to think that FB&TC's self-titled is one but I always end up skipping at least one. Usually Steak n Sabre or Solid Gold.

Apart from the Pixies and Frank Black, these are some of the records that blew me away because of their incredible coherence and density (the kind of record that you are forced to listen to from the beginning 'til the end):

*Godspeed You Black Emperor! - "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven!"
*Bowie - Diamond Dogs
*Bowie - Outside
*Tool - Aenima
*Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
*Lou Reed - Berlin
*Programme - Mon Cerveau Dans Ma Bouche
*Programme - L'Enfer Tiède
*Dominique A - Remué
*Diabologum - #3
*Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
*Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
*Fantômas - The Director's Cut
*Mr Bungle - Disco Volante
*Led Zeppelin - IV
*Queen - II
*Queen - A Night At The Opera
*Pink Floyd - A Saucerful Of Secrets
*Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
*Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
*Joy Division - Closer
*The Cure - Faith
*The Cure - Pornography
*King Crimson - Red
*Kraftwerk - Trans Europe Express
*Nirvana - In Utero
*Arcade Fire - Funeral
*Radiohead - OK Computer
*Radiohead - Kid A
*Radiohead - Amnesiac
*Primus - Pork Soda
*Blonde Redhead - Misery Is A Butterfly
*Melvins - Houdini
*Low - Things We Lost In The Fire
*Mogwai - CODY
*Autechre - ae

Heh. I've loved The Beautiful South since I was about 8 years old. I sort of grew out of them for a bit and now I love 'em again! Their recent stuff is a bit shite though.

I typed out a reply to this yesterday, but it disappeared. Basically, it went along the lines of SotT having a few duff songs while Around the World in a Day was pretty much perfect.
I kind of lost Prince after 1993 or something and never picked him up again.

Actually scratch Revoler off that list. But insert David Sylvian - Secrets of the Beehive. :)

Metallica's Master Of Puppets is a total rock classic. Ride The Lightening and ...And Justice For All too, but MOP just has that edge. It's funny when you get a band like Metallica, at least in their earlier days, they create this standard that leaves a gap between them and so many sub-standard metal bands with filler-heavy albums.

I was gonna say Purple Rain, then I considered Sign like someone said, but I'm gonna stay with PR- it really is one complete record that fits just right.

Someone who has made some really strong albums, that I would put in that same catagory is Madonna- there's Madonna, Like A Prayer, & Bedtime Stories.

Another album which, though it has a lot of songs that aren't my favorites, the overall feeling is good, is Elvis Costello's Get Happy.

I agree with the director's cut but Disco Volante over California? And Pork Soda over Tales from the Punchbowl - they are great albums but don't know about that.....

The only thing that sounds remotely out of place on "Gish" is D'Arcy's vocals to "Daydream," although I like the song. It just doesn't fit in with the sound of the rest of the album.
