Hello. I was curious to know if any of you guys out there are abled music readers. Ive learnt how to recognise notes on the staff etc etc, but im pretty slow when it comes to actually locating the note on the fret board. So what im asking is there any tips that will help me remember the location of each note on the fretboard. Please dont let the answer be practice

I think the answer is knowing your fretboard. How well do you know your fretboard? What's the 4th fret of the 5th string? Where is that on the staff? What's the 8th fret of the 3rd string (...uh, hold on, I know it...)?
Here is almost the exact exercise I was given, with the admonishment that if it was done once each day for a month I would know the fretboard solidly and permanently, and the astonishment that no student ever had done it each day for that long.
I didn't either and there is still a "slow" spot on the 3rd and 4th strings on the 8th-10th frets. It's a bloody nuisance and I will set about correcting that today, I promise. |

I kinda devised my own lesson myself which seems to help a lot.
For example you find all the A's starting from the low E and remeber numerically where the A's are eg: 5 0 7 2 10 etc etc.
I guess like Broken face didnt say practice is the best way. But youre right hammer, it is a nuisance.

This should help. If you get a good book or find a good site explaining it you'll be reading music withi no time
However that image doesnt show sharps and flats so watch out.

And of course, there's tricks for it. Like the spaces read FACE and the staff lines Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge. And the first line below the staff is middle c. Etc.

When I found out I had to learn how to read notation for my music class at college I did what any hard working, determined individual would have done and promptly asked to leave the course. I just couldn't FACE it.

I think it depends on what you want to do, mcil. You definitely have to be able to read notation for music but if you have the option to do 'music technology' (which I believe involves less thory and more practical/recording type stuff) I'm not so sure. There's no need to learn now if you're gonna do music but it would probably be handy to try and get a headstart.

Thank Christ, I'm planning on doing Music Technology in Edinburgh, so that has come as a major relief:) Only recently I found out I need Higher Maths in this course whilst I'm only doing Intermeduiate 2 just now, but thankfully that's all I have to worry about

I didn't say you definitely don't need to know notation, just that it is less likely in music tech.
(I really don't want to be the guy who said you don't need to learn anything and then you get there and are behind the rest of the class!)
Try to pick up a prospectus from the college you're going to. It should have the course entry requirements in it (or see if there's a website with such information).
The worst that can happen is that you end up learning in college as part of the course. You'll probably pick it up in no time. I just didn't want to learn because I'm lazy!

It's amazing to see violinists read and play notation at the same time.

I used to play violin and it wasn't actually that hard. It was probably due to the fact they dont have tabs so if you wanna play you have to learn to read music.

I fear Rachmaninov - the guy uses four staves at once in some of his piano pieces. We had to read orchestra scores sometimes on my A-level Music. That's pretty hardcore.
Good luck with it though, it's a useful thing to be able to do.

I can read tab and very very very slowly figure out whats going on in a standard notation staff. What I get for being self-taught, I guess.

I too am self taught, and for Higher music here in Scotland you don;t have to read standard notation, TAB is perfectly acceptable, so if I have to do it at college, it's kinda shit, why didn't they make me do it this year???

Here is how I do it, and IMO this is the best way to learn all of the notes.
First, you need a metronome. Set it at a slow speed. Now, youre going to choose one note at a time, say C# for example. Start at either the top or bottom string, and play a different C# for each click of the metronome. Works great! |

I'm starting a music tech course this year too. I'm certain you don't need to be able to read music. I know this because my friend is currently doing a music tech course and he's a drummer. |
