I've always said the best thing about p2p/downloading is the ability to try before you buy. It looks like the folks at Napster agree, and while their model is a little wanting, the basic elements are there.
They're trying it in the US first, essentially, you can listen to any song/album/etc up to 5 times free. No charge, no nothing. After that, if you want to listen more, you buy it. If you don't, no problem, you don't listen again (and why would you).
There are a few things that may deter a little, but essentially the main one is that you stream until you buy, which is no problem if your place of music preview is your computer, but I frequently download and put it on my iPod to check it out. Still, streaming is quite solid and might be worth a checkout. Obviously the streaming quality is not perfect either, but I think that's fair for a trial system.
A search for "Frank Black" yielded:
Frank Black - Frank Black - TOTY - COR - Honeycomb
Frank Black & The Catholics - BLD
Frank Black & The Stax Pistols - Breathless (track)
Thoughts? Anyone using this? Trying it?

Is it based on P2P? If so it's quite stupid. |

In fact it's a bit like going to the record shop and listen to a record. I won't try it because you can't play it in your usual music player.

Yes it is, except you do it at home when you want to, I guess. Plus, you probably have more options than what they've got playing at your record shop. I don't know, I think it's a step in the right direction... who the hell decides on a song in a 30 second preview ala other online services? OK, the Britney fans, but certainly not me.

I think it's a good idea. I didn't know about this. Has it started already?

Yup, just in the US though. :(
And very true, Remi.

Ban the mp3. If I can't touch it and rub the cover art over my face lovingly, then I don't want it.

You rub cover art over your face?
Perhaps it is best if you move to Canada.

The tactile nature of the physical album is good. Rubbing an album all over your face in a pornographic way?....Eh....

Hadn't heard about it but the general idea looks very interesting. Actually it's exactly what I do when I download off p2p servers, I listen to albums 2 or 3 times and then delete the files, wether the music was good or not. I still won't ever pay for an mp3, but it's a great idea.

I haven't used it but I could see people (myself, perhaps) trying the tunes on napster and then d/ling the good ones from a p2p program. What a beautiful system for the wicked!

Seldom, but I like to keep my options open. You know.
I mean, I can't imagine not owning In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel on anything smaller than a 12" record, because it looks so good. The CD doesn't do it justice. That goes for a lot of artwork actually, especially 4AD stuff.

Hmmm, I mean you have to pay to keep it. But letting you hear stuff for free is decent enough, I suppose!
