Watched Time of the Wolf/ Le Temps du Loup over the week-end. "A nightmarish vision of a post-apocalyptic world in which society has completely broken down" It basically boils down to a bunch of people trying to survive without much food, any law and not much hope for the future. A fairly ok film.
What bothered me was a scene of a horse being killed for food. It was shot and as it fell to the ground the horse's neck was cut with a blade, causing a huge gush of blood to spurt out. All very brutal and dramatic.
As I read some reviews and message boards on the film it came out that this horse was actually killed for the scene. I still cannot find any interview with Michael Haneke, the director, which supports this fact. Perhaps someone on here knows something? I guess it could've been an issue in France upon the films release.
Anyone think it is fair to kill an animal for a movie, even if the animal had to be put down for whatever reason.
I think it was unnecessary, some special effects could've been used.

Great topic title! Did you know the film THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY? spawned from a play entitled MARATHON 33 produced by the Actor's Studio in the early 1960's derived from improvisational exercises? No horses were killed in that. But it did help to cause the downfall of independent productions put on Off-Broadway by the Studio (then still under Lee Strasberg's direction)...so, in a sense, the public production annex of the Actor's Studio was put down like a sick horse soon thereafter. Kind of ties in.

Yes, I know about the film. This is how I came by the title. I haven't seen it though but there is also a song. Maybe from the film?
Godfather's head in the bed. Was that a real horse's head.
I just noticed Michael Cunningham's last novel Specimen Days lying next to the desk. The cover has a picture of a mounted horse's head with the eye gouged out.

I believe the horse head in the Godfather is legit. I remember reading about it somewhere - i think the horse died of natural causes, and then the producers chopped its head off.

Oh my God! It's eye was gouged away??!! There is no song from the film TSHDT persay, only a repeated music box-type diddy repeated throughout the film. You should watch it...it's very good, if you can get past the Jane Fonda theatrics and the Michael Sarrazin ugliness. The play M33 is very good too. It was written by this chick (June Havoc) who actually participated in dance marathons during the depression back in the 20's and 30's as a way of survival. These underworld-run fixed contests were abolished just before 1950, if you can beleive that. Everyone knew they were crooked, but they kept on going. But back to the real topic, I always feel angry when an animal is sacrificed for a film...even though it may be headed for slaughter anyway. I don't know...it's weird. I can forgive these events of the past before animal activists became involved in the safety and treatment of animals in films decades ago...but now, if it happens, it is more than eyebrow-raising. Even when an insect is killed in film I don't like it. But I love when vegetation is killed!

Offtopic: There is also a Canadian band called They Shoot Horses, Don't They. Wasn't aware of the film, I guess that's where it came from.

From imdb.com about the Godfather:
During rehearsals, a false horse's head was used for the bedroom scene. For the actual shot, a real horse's head was used. The head was acquired from a dog-food factory.

i think if it's a matter of getting the shot, it's worth it.

I just recently watched L'Age D'Or and a rat was stung by a scorpion. Judging by the size of the rat to the scorpion, I'm sure the amount of venom was lethal. Even though the movie is 70 something years old, I was somewhat bothered by this...at the same time, I kind of thought it was funny, too. I began to picture the set-up of this shot, and how there were people antagonizing the scorpion with this dumb, gullible rat, just to catch on film it's demise. It made me giggle. But then again, I thought UNITED 93 was a riot!

remember in "Fear" with Marky Mark, when the little brother blew the dog whistle and the severed dog head came through the doggy door. Fake or not, it freaked me out.
For such a bad movie, it is pretty disturbing- there's the dog scene, plus the scene where Marky kills Nicole's friend in the woods by breaking his neck.
(of all the ways that people get killed in movies, for some reason I find that the most upsetting. Like when Kevin Bacon breaks the woman's neck in "Hollow Man".)

I like the film 'they shoot horses, don't they?' always thought those freaky dance off things would make a good basis for a music video.
Have no idea about the horse though which makes this post pretty redundant

I saw Cache a little while ago.
The thing about the horse in Time Of The Wolf sounds familiar. Apocalpyse Now features the slaughter of a cow. Nicolas Cage ate a coachroach in Vampire's Kiss.
But for really hideous stuff, there are the Italian Cannibal movies like Cannibal Holocaust and Cannibal Ferox that feature the dismemberment of live animals. Horrible stuff.

i read somewhere that there were rumors that they used actual corpses to dress some of the sets in APOCALYPSE NOW. but hey, at least they already dead.
watching ANDROMEDA STRAIN last night weirded me out a little bit (this scene where they have monkeys and rats get exposed to the virus and die). they must have drugged them somehow. the monkeys really looked like they were suffering. and i don't think it was just good acting (thought i won't rule that out)

FLOOP!!!!!!!!!!!! I TOO watched Andromeda Strain last night! I was looking for a dvd in my collection to fall asleep to last night and decided to put AS on...of course I sat and watched the whole thing. I love that movie! In fact, the dying monkey part made me think of this thread whilst I watched it! Is Rod Serling hiding in the wings? What time did you watch it at? I put it on at exactly 11:00pm...wouldn't it be a trip if we were watching it simultaneously? And fashioning dummies to boot?!
