Our nod to the glory of surf music. We'd actually rehearsed 'Apache' by the Shadows, but we ended up doing this.

Velouria

hold my head
we'll trampoline
finally through the roof
on to somewhere near
and far in time
velouria
her covering
traveling career
she can really move
oh velveteen

my velouria, my velouria

even I'll adore ya
my velouria
my velouria
uh-huh-huh huh huh

say to me
where have you been
finally through the roof
and how does lemur skin
reflect the sea?

we will wade in the shine of the ever
we will wade in the shine of the ever
we will wade in the tides of the summer
every summer
every...
my velouria
my velouria

forever green
I know she's here
in California
I can see the tears
of shastasheen

my velouria, my velouria
(v-e-l-o-u-r-i-a)
even I'll adore ya
(v-e-l-o-u-r-i-a)
my velouria (x2)

(even I'll adore ya)

quote
Velouria: that was My Victoria, pretty good, but The Kinks song . . . I don't know it's gotta be a good song to get away with it. But when I found "Velouria", it sounded great
- Q September 1990

Well, the sister continent of Atlantis is Lemuria, sank in the Pacific Ocean, and the remnants of a culture are holed up in Mount Shasta, which is in Northern California - its a hollowed out mountain. They live in the mountain today, because it's an ongoing kind of thing. So lemur skin, fur, Velouria rhymes with Lemuria... kind of, and that's sort of what that's all about.
- MTV

Allison

from distant star
to this here bar
the me, the you
where are we now?
hooray the blues of everyone
Allison

keeps a smile
around a while
he took a flight
and jettisoned
we'll go tonight
to hear him tell
"oh well"
Allison
Allison

oooooooh

and when the planet hit the sun
I saw the face of Allison
Allison
Allison
Allison
Allison

quote
but of course Elvis Costello has a song called Alison, so I had to change it
- Q September 1990

note
Song was originally about a girl called Alison but he changed it to be about Mose Allison the Jazz pianist because of the Elvis Costello song of the same name

Is She Weird

I know you're rich in
good clothes
and little things
your mind is fancy
(and your car is bitchin')

is she weird
is she weird, is she white
is she promised to the night
and her head has no room
and her head has no room
and her head has no room

and her head has no room

your heart is ripshit
your mouth is everywhere
I'm lyin' in it

is she weird
is she over me
like the stars and the sun
like the stars and the sun
is she weird

is she weird, is she white
is she promised to the night
and her head has no room
and her head has no room
and her head has no room

and her head has no room

no more of this girl crying
I'm here, your big man
you're mine

is she weird, (ah-uh) is she white
is she promised to the night
and her head has no room
and her head has no room
and her head has no room
and her head has no room
and her head has no room

head has no room

Ana

she's my fave
undressing in the sun
return to sea - bye
forgetting everyone
eleven high
ride a wave
ride a wave

quote
That's a five-line verse poem, but it's an anagram: the first line of each verse spells "SUR-FER". She's, like, this naked surfer girl on a board on top of an 11 -foot wave, y'know cruising in never-never land. Never-never ocean.
- Q September 1990

I'm always playing stupid games like that. See 'Ana'? It's like anaGRAM. S.U.R.F.E.R., It's a matter of needing lyrics really fast because they're setting up the vocal mikes, and you'd better get the song done or it's gonna be an instrumental!
- Music Express, October 1990

All Over The World

hey babe
how you doin?
can I be your boy?

a pet at my side
God in the sky
snow falling down
freeze my body to the ground
I can't ride
but one more time
I will ride
all over the world

washed over the side
top of the sky
slow diver down
two feet land on a different ground
you can't live easily
you can't even speak
but all of them speak
all over the world
all over the world
all over the world
all over the world
all over the world
all over the world
all over the world

I will meet you over there
I am going to meet you over there

washed over the side
top of the sky
slow diver down
two feet land on a different ground
you can't live easily
you can't even speak
fish all of them speak
all over the world

a plain with no herd
not even a bird
when one side is hot
the other side of the moon is not
it's just like a ride
maybe some time
they'll make it a ride
all over the world
all over the world
all over the world
all over the world
all over the world
all over the world
all over the world

I will meet you over there
I am (I am) going to meet you over there

time is an arrangement
time is an arranger
I am a derangement

all my thoughts
all I am are my thoughts
all my thoughts
I am all what I'm taught

better call the ranger
got a train derailment
better call the ranger

all I'm taught
all I am are my thoughts
all my thoughts
all I am are my thoughts
what I'm not

quote
I read how some artist - Man Ray, I think - did a photographic portrait of a famous actress. They went out to the countryside, but he forgot to bring his lenses. He took the lenses out of his glasses and got the best portrait ever. I like that kind of thinking. Like "All Over The World" It's total spontaneity, just screaming and jumping around, and the end section goes into a whole other song. Our producer was really pissed because he didn't know what was going on. But I didn't either! I said, 'Look. I'm a surrealist, plus I'm lazy and full of shit, so let's just see how this comes out, all right?' And in the end, it was his favourite song
- Melody Maker, April 1991

The longest song we recorded ever. 5min is the usual average time for a song now, but for us it was a real event
- Black Francis (Alec Eiffel website - no other source)

Dig For Fire

there is this old woman
she lives down the road
you can often find her
kneeling inside of her hole
and I often ask her
"are you looking for the mother lode?"
huh?
no.
no my child, this is not my desire
and then she said

I'm digging for fire
I'm digging for fire
I'm digging for fire
I'm digging for fire

there is this old man
who spent so much of his life sleeping
that he is able to keep awake for the rest of his years
he resides
on a beach
in a town
where I am going to live
and I often ask him
"are you looking for the mother lode?"
huh?
no.
no my child, this is not my desire
and then he said

I'm digging for fire
I'm digging for fire
I'm digging for fire
I'm digging for fire
for fire!

quote
Oh, it's all nonsense, a bad Talking Heads imitation. Just like any other cool rock'n roll song or pop song, the CONTENT isn't what hits you. I mean, what the hell is 'London Calling'? I don't know anything about stupid English punk politics, but 'London Calling' sounds TOTALLY great. That's all it is. Gosh, I'm so tired of people referring to me as hopelessly obscure. I mean, pick up a Beatles album - come on! Who knows what those songs were about? Nobody knows.
- Music Express, October 1990

Down To The Well

betty always knows
betty always tells
she laughing desperately
said it felt like a river inside her bones
when she went down to the well

i'm gonna be with her
she is gonna take me there
lead me by my hand
her body a rocking chair for my soul
when we go down to the well
(chick a oom)

I can hardly wait, baby
(chick a oom)
I can hardly wait
'til we go down to the well
(chick a oom)

been thinking to myself
and if a life's not long
what matter does it make
if there'll be favorite songs playing in my head
when we go down to the well

I can hardly wait, betty
I can hardly wait
'till we go down to the well
down to the well

The Happening

they got a ranch they call
number fifty-one
they got a ranch they call
nubler fifty-one
can't see it at all
'less you're flying by
just sitting there square
baking in the sun
beneath the sky

they're gonna put it down
right on the strip
they're gonna put it down
on the Vegas strip
they're gonna put it down
and step outside
into the lights
right outta that ship
saying Hi!

i was driving doing nothing on the shores of Great Salt Lake
when they put it on the air i put it in the hammer lane
i soon forgot myself and i forgot about the brake
i forgot about all laws and i forgot about the rain
they were talking on the 9 and all across the amy band
across the road they were turning around and headed south with me
it got so crowded on the road i started driving in the sand
my head was feeling scared but my heart was feeling free
the desert turned to mud it seems that everybody heard
everbody was remembering to forget they had the chills
then i heard the voices on a broadcast from up on the bird
they were getting interviewed by some Goodman whose name was Bill
i'm almost there to Vegas where they're putting on a show
they've come so far i've lived this long at least i must just go and say hello

quote
That's based on this guy Billy Goodman, who had a radio talk show out of Las Vegas, The Billy Goodman Happening, dedicated to UFO stuff people calling in to tell of how their husband got murdered by an alien. The song The Happening tells of how the aliens land in Vegas: it's always been my wish that if they do land, it'll be Billy and his audience that get the credit in the greeting!

Blown Away

now the sun is burning
in deepest space
that's the way things are
through a storm I called you
it fell each day
I didn't get so far
my words get blown away

my lips are moving
if you touch my face
did you hear my scream?
while we were sleeping
I tried to say
even in my dreams
my words get blown away

now the sun is burning
in the deepest space
I didn't get so far

quote
Like one of those Neil Young love songs that exist out there in space somewhere. It's not about anyone or anything specifically. It's not about her eyes our the back of her knees.

this is haiku
- Music Express, October 1990

Yeah, the first two verses to that song are in a Haiku format - Japanese verse with three lines: five syllables, then seven, then five. Only thing, it isn't true Haiku cos it doesn't incorporate nature and make some philosophical statement about the universe or whatever
- Sounds, December 1990

'Havalina' was the most difficult of those songs to record. It's in 6/4. We wanted David to do fills in 4/4, but he couldn't because he was listening to us. We ended up playing a bunch of chords in 4, had David do the fills, and then we recorded our real parts in 6.
- Melody Maker, April 1991

note
Havalina is the Mexican name for a wild boar, nothing to do with band of same name who did, however, get The Pixies stoned in Texas - Q September 1990

Many many thanks to tobafett for sompiling all these lyrics and also thanks to those who turned up some quotes on the quotes page.

If you have any corrections, quotes, insights to any of these songs please feel free to let us know.

What would also be amazing is information on the singles released from this album.

Thanks in advance.

A humble correction to Charles' quotes about Ana. The lyrics form an acrostic, not an anagram.

Rock Music:

(Frank in response to ccuadros asking what encatuse means in the 'King' thread:)

"hmmm...that might be some special puerto rican word. i can't remember. i think it means "don't mess with me" or something like that. as i recall it was kind of a local"spanglish" word; or it could be that i just mangled the language. i've done a lot of that!"

Havalina:

From Dag Wieers:

"Sedona is a city in Arizona, US."

"Havalina, the album's closing song, was composed after Charles and his girlfriend were chased by a wild pig in Arizona. 'So he decided to write a real pretty love song. I've been thinking about this...I don't think there's anything innately erotic about pigs. But generally they are sweet, shy, mysterious creatures. Especially the little ones. When they get big, they get kinda gross.'" - Kim Deal in Melody Maker"

Apparently, the word is actually Javalina, but is pronounced ha-va-lee-na!

Hey amigos since I live in Puerto Rico and some of you know my work in http://aleceiffel.free.fr/ I can tell you that the only word I can think of matching that "encatuse" word is ENGATUSE that comes from Engatusar or fooling somebody(like what a con artist would do to take your money or make you do something you don't wan't to.And Havalina is from the wild boar name which is JABALI,Charles just gave it a femenine twist to the word which doesn't exist but sounds pretty.
