Playlist is up here:

Jangly, slightly shambolic indie music from the mid-80's, so named due to the NME 'C86' free cassette which spawned the scene. Most famous band to emerge were The Wedding Present.

This is just like the night I still want to set up in Manchester. I am just not sure of the demand.

Good luck with it, I hope it goes well.

Of course there's demand!

And this is the other Offbeat is it? My old ex used to go to Warwick, their indie society is called Offbeat too, there was a bit of friction from what I remember, to who copied who...

The Indie Society that we have in Birmingham is pretty laughable, but they put on some good nights. There's alwys a chance to hijack the DJ box and launch a Frank/Pixies assault.

Birmingham has an Indie Society? Does every city I go to keep these things secret from me? Or is this strictly university, see my Birmingham days were spent rotating between snobs and the foundry (although I believe the indie night at the foundry is now held at the acadamy and sucks bad)

I went to an indie thing in Sheffield once, felt dirty.

the indie soc's are Uni things, so generally if you're not a member or don't know people who know people then you won't really hear about them. although they're open to everyone normally. there's one in edinburgh 'the egg' on saturdays, it's members and students only but the guy who runs it seems cool, going to try and go down one night when i'm up there.

Snobs is Birmingham really isn't that great as it apparently used to be, packed out, the kind of 'indie' you hear on Radio 1, and awful spirits.

Well off the top of my head I know of 5 personal friends who would come. And there must be 20 or so devote Pixie-ites at Smile. So add your friends, and you've easily made the door money back. Plus remember the reunion gigs! Loads of people would come out of the woodwork... If you got a certain tribute band to play that same night too, they'd be queuing to the hookers.

Thats a shame, I used to go on a wednesday (50p vodka) and would flail like a lunatic to it's the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine) but I went back once after I'd left the city and it was like a shocking trad indie cattle market.

Custard factory usually puts on some good nights though, look out for uber-cabaret is my tip.

There's probably 50p's worth of vodka in it.

In honour of Sheffield, here's a little photostory featuring Sean Bean (Sheffield's favourite thespian son!):

No friction as far as I am aware?? Offbeat at Warwick was definitely first... started in the mid 80's... I used to DJ at it in the early 90's, and enjoyed it so much that when I moved up to Sheffield in 1996 I set up my own night with the same name, though with a slightly different music policy.

However Sheffield Offbeat is not a 'union society' or 'student night' in any sense - roughly 50% of our regular crowd are non-students, and we advertise it/flyer it all over the city.

Incidently, Nimrod's Son are looking at doing some student union shows, so if you reckon your union and it's inhabitants would make ideal candidiates, drop me a line!
