Well, you might try FB solo. Start with the orange album and work your way through. Arcade Fire is probably as good as, certainly a unique sound and I bloody love 'em. Otherwise, your SOS is SOL.

dunno about the arcade fire (certainly lyrics are no where near frank's lyrics)..... they have a great sound but alot of the songs on the album are skipable.... I listened to the album consistently for about 2 months but now have no inclination to listen to it again... |

I agree with Garbonzia agreeing with Carl. And his recommendation for McLusky.

Since taste is relative...
The Arcade Fire (are great) Talking Heads Interpol The Donnas Morrissey! Fugazi Yo la Tengo Sigur Ros Babybird Cocorosie Sonic Yout' Flaming Lips The Shins Galaxy 500 The Velvet Underground Jeremy Enigk
Try these things for music: The radio Record shops Parties or clubs
As much as a snob as I am, there is no difference between styles, just among styles. And there are a lot of styles. Hope that helps... unless you were being coy and ironic. |

Pere Ubu is nice. It seems that The Modern Dance and Dub Housing are the more popular albums. |

I hate McLusky.
Check out Dillinger Four, Archers of Loaf, Modest Mouse (I've only heard three songs by them, but the three songs I have heard all contend for the distinction of the best song ever), Fugazi, Beck, Camper Van Beethoven, Guided By Voices, Brainiac, Aram Khachaturian, Orthrelm, and The Residents.
EDIT: and Talking Heads. |

There are a few bands I like better than the Pixies, but that doesn't necessarily mean you will.

I can only think of a handful of bands who I think are as good as or better than the pixies though most are classic bands
Beach Boys Doors Velvet Underground/Lou Reed Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Creedence Ramones Clash The Cure Smiths Rolling Stones Stooges/Iggy Neil Young
David Hasselhoff...

IMHO Valhalla is better than the Pixies. No band can match their dedication to the craft of rock and roll. |

Don't know about as good as in all cases and certainly not better than, but my input would be: Arcade Fire Radiohead Frank Black Bright Eyes Adam Green White Stripes Devendra Banhart
"Goodnight Kim", "Goodnight Charles", "Goodnight Kim", "Goodnight Charles", "Goodnight Joe".... "Goodnight Charles" |

Hmm. I really love my music, but try as I might I find Arcade Fire annoying more than enjoyable.
My fave band other than Pixies are definitely Les Savy Fav. For those who don't know them, it's hard-edged NY post punk, quite uptempo and very quirky. They're bloody awesome live.
Other modern bands that I could compare to the genius of Pixies are Explosions In The Sky and McLusky (as already pointed out). Quirky bands that people either love or hate. |

this is pointless, but..
in my opinion, radiohead is very overappreciated, bla bla, and can't see why a pixies fan should check them looking for anything as good as pixies.
i personally currently am a bit into the first period of Public Image Limited.
also, i've only recently noted that the only bass played that approximates Kim Deal (for me, at least) is Stephen Hanley from The Fall ("Hex Enduction Hour", "This Nation's..."). |

Not pointless at all. I agree 100%. Never did like their stuff. I'd rather listen to Bush's Sixteen Stone for the rest of my life than hear boring Radiohead songs.
what can i say? your mum.

I'll have ask her if she like Radiohead, but probably not.

There aren't many bands as good as the Pixies, let alone better. These are the ones I can think of: The Smiths, They Might Be Giants, The Cure, and The Magnetic Fields. These bands are good but not in the same league: The White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand, Spoon.
