So i went bowling for the first time in awhile last night, and i had a great time. By the end of my time there, i was really throwin' rocks.
Does anyone here enjoy the game of bowling? I'm debating joining a league - any people here ever do this and can steer me in the proper direction?

Did you take the skinheads?
I enjoy bowling, though I do have a problem finding a ball I am comfortable with. I spend the entire first game looking, having to use ones that are either too heavy or with holes that are too small.
I also get sore fingers after a couple of games. I don't have the thoughest hands. That's office work for ya.

Yes, I enjoy it, and I've thought being in a league would fun as long as drinking beer was more important to the title than winning. How to join a league? No idea. I'm sure you can probably get placed on a team (like being added to a group of golfers), but that doesn't sound fun.
I'm a fairly weak bowler. Probably average around 135 and my top score I think was in the 170s.
Does bowling seem overly expensive? It seemsto me that a couple of games in the evening ends up costing up around $12 (not counting alcohol). More than a movie or a baseball game seems out of whack to me. I am cheap. |

I'd play more bowling if they sold alcohol in the bolwing alleys here like they do in America. Usually I come home from bowling with burst blood vessels under my skin on my fingers from using ill-fitting balls.

I used to bowl every week back in the early '90s but I rarely go anymore. They tore down a couple of my favorite alleys and I haven't gotten over it (RIP Hollywood Star Lanes and Grandview Lanes). Plus I used to go to meet chicks and now I'm married.
I averaged about 155. I'm not very stylish but I seldom split and I'm good at picking up spares. Once I had 18 closed frames in a row. I must have had about 20 games in the 190s (including a couple 199s) before I ever broke 200.
How about a quiz? I got them all right except the last question: http://www.funtrivia.com/playquiz/quiz95193ae82c0.html |

If you go a lot, get your own shoes...they pay for themselves pretty quickly and they're much more comfortable than the shitty rental shoes. Also some alleys will rent lanes by the hour which can save bucks. |

I used to play in a league when I was about 16-17. Love it, and just don't play nearly enough. My best man and I are extremely competitive with each other, bowling being the main focus. We always try and have a few games when we get together.
The bowling alley should have a league running - I guess the tables/fixtures will be on the notice board somewhere. It'll probably be a case of talking to the staff and sticking your name down for the start of the new league. I've no idea if you'll need a minimum score/series score. And yep, shoes will help, as will getting your own ball. You can even get the holes drilled to fit your hand.

My dad used to be pretty serious about it ala Bill Murray in Kingpin. He had the robotic looking glove and everything. He'd take me with him on league nights when I was around 13 so I could keep score and make a little dough. It was funny watching grown ups get all competetive and tense about winning. My dad almost got in a couple fights with opposing team members. Funny stuff. And how can you beat Bowling Alley food! I still go once in a great while. To me, there's no better way to go re-live some 1970's style Americana than to go bowling or rollerskating.

i love bowling, though i don't get a chance to do it often..
aside from getting your own shoes, getting your own ball is not a bad idea either. i heard some statstic once that the holes in bowling balls have a disturbingly high concentration of human feces in them. cuz people don't wash their hands after going to the bathroom.
try not to think about that next time you go bowling

Did I mention I also have my own ball? Not to brag, but it doesn't smell bad in the finger holes. |

It's okay. I've only played a couple of times, and not for ages. I think I was okay at it.

Bowling balls are pretty easy to come by used. I got mine at GoodWill for only $10. It is purple and even has the former owners name on it "Darla," which I thought would be such a good name for my bowling alter-ego. |

that's awesome! i used to use a ball at my local lane with the name "Buster" on it, and that was perfect as well. in fact, if i do get a ball, i may just have "Buster" put back on it.

"Buster" is even better than "Darla"! I think you should absolutely do it! Too bad we can't all have an alter-ego bowling tournament |

13/15 - got the last one and no.4 wrong (9-count counts as strike). I have never heard of that before. Is it common in the US?

I like bowling pretty well, but I suck at it. I guess I need more practice.

Perhaps The Simpsons has ruined this word for me, but I keep looking and seeing 'boweling'.
Also, who's Dustin?

Says who? We should totally have an "International FB.net Bowling Day" where we all go bowling and get documentation of our scores and compare and give out cheesy prizes.

If it's based on one game I'm in with a chance, first game wicked good, second game I play like a blind 90 year old with no legs or bones in her arms. |

I don't know, but this is better because there is beer and second hand smoke involved ('cept when Jersey bans indoor smoking in mere weeks...)

WOW I pity that bowling ball! It looks like it is about to get absolutly dominated the way it is so small in your hands!

i love bowling! seems to be the only 'sport' i'm any good at! although people who play in leagues seem to pretty much get a strike or half strike every game, i'm no where near that standard, suppose it takes practise though.
