My "friend" doesn't like Guided By Voices. Or at least he thinks he doesn't. I think I can convince him that they are a great band via locking him in a room and playing the following songs for him to hear:

The Official Ironmen Rally Song
Everywhere With Hellicopter

Any other suggestions? I'm looking for quintessential GBV, but easily accessible as well; "Smothered In Hugs", for example, might be off-putting to someone who likes guitars that are in tune. Of course, one could claim that I shouldn't be friends with someone who chooses to use lack of precision as an excuse to neglect a great melody. |

hey, this is great. i'm really starting to get more into gbv. i listened to a few tunes a couple years ago but never really got into it and found it hard to pick and choose since there is so much material. but then i saw them play on austin city limits and was really impressed. i've got human amusements that i really enjoy. a list like this is what i've been looking for! i'd also add

i've owned you for centuries - robert pollard
kathryn put those 2 songs on her cd swap#5 mix
and jop- i love that idea of a private record company that you mentioned on the king's thread!

IceCream, there's actually a "Best of" that Mike bought me to get me into them with a lot of good introductory tracks. It's called Human Amusement at Hourly Rates.
Anyway, for someone who sits on the border with them, I'll tell you what I've heard from them that I like:
Everywhere with Helicopters
Cutout Witch
Twilight Campfighter
Bulldog Skin
Glad Girls (sorry, I know it's pop/controversial, but I like it)
Chasing Heather Crazy
Captain's Dead
Slick As Snail
I also recommend some of his solo stuff. Really like Pop Zeus and in general stuff he does with Doug Gillard.
But I'm not much of a fan so I'm hardly an authority.

Oh man, I love Hey Aardvark. I would never think to put that on a "intro to Bob" thing, but then who knows what might catch someone's ear drums and play just right the right beat. I usually show people stuff from their later records that I think is more accessible, and their singles. Stuff you haven't mentioned that I would include:

I guess it depends on what type of music your friend likes. There's a gateway drug to Bobage for pretty much any type of musical addiction.

saw Mr. Pollard last night. Dave P on guitar.
the band sounds fucking good. it was a good show. Dave Phillips looks healthy and happy (although i bet secretly he wishes he was still playing with Frank)..
i'm amazed that Robert Pollard can still maintain his excessive drinking and manage to put on a stellar show. . i'm inspired by the way he's managed to be a raging drunk and still have a successful career. i think he's an inspiration to kids across america |

Some of my fav's. So much to choose from, Teenage FBI is also great. I have a friend who is obsessed with them the way I am with Pixies/FB, I really need to put them on heavy rotation.

I think I've said this before, but "Teenage FBI" is the only GBV song that I've ever really liked. I've heard others that were okay, but I wasn't thrilled by them. Sort of like Pavement's "Shady Lane."

so i heard this song on the radio today and it's driving me nuts cause i can't find the name of the song. i'm pretty sure it's gbv or robert pollard. i've heard it a few times before. it goes something like this, "if you can't get a girl.....blame it on the moon, blame it on the stars.... " that would be swell if anyone recognizes this.

I LOVE "The Brides Have Hit Glass", Kathryn. It showcases Bob's incredible ability to link parts to one another. Once Bob sings "just to hit glass", the chord resolves to the one you were expecting, and that chord just sounds gorgeous. It's strucutred beautifully (the chorus flows to the verse and back to the chorus), it's incredibly poignant and heartfelt, and it has one of the greatest vocal melodies ever to see the light of day. An absolute 10 out 10 song. I'm glad you suggested it.
I am not as fond of "Sad if I Lost It", though. It's been a while since I heard it, but I do know that Bob's playing the keyboard on that one. It sounds as though he's figuring out how to play the song as it's being recorded. |

I started my GbV collection with the best of too. Since then I bought Mag Earwhig. Add my votes to Bulldog Skin( my current fave), Motor Away, Sad If I Lost It, Everywhere With Helicopters, Jane Of The Waking Universe, and Glad Girls.

Oh, and what do the Pollard fans think about Kid Marine? I have that one too but I don't really like it.

Hey Denis. You can get Some Drinking Iimplied from here: http://www.rockathonrecords.com Looks like it's worth between 10-15 bones, depending on your bone. I'm sure you have a very value bone, Denis.
As for Kid Marine, I love it. When I first go it, I was really obsessed with it for a while, and it contains some classics, including one of my all time favourite Bob songs, "Town of Mirrors". It doesn't have many "anthems", save for maybe the opener, but it is full greater shorter length songs and experiments.

If Some Drinking Applied is anything like The Who Went Home and Cried
(I think that's true) it's a lo-fi dvd/home video thing. Only fans will like it,
and you can get it for 5 dollars on ebay. Now the Electrified Conclusion, that's a dvd I would like to have. GBV last show, 60+ songs!
I wish Frank Black was more like Robert Pollard. I don't really care about quality control! Quantity is what COUNTS.

Oh man, How Loft I Am? is THE shit. I've been wanting to a 80s GBV best of for ever. Some absolute classics. Liar's Tale too is just beyond gorgeous. And everyone needs to hear "Pantherz".

Seeing as podcasts are a bit of a hot topic right now, this might be of interest (thanks to the Strong Lions mailist). This guy is podcasting a "series of chronological explorations of one of the greatest bands ever: Guided by Voices". Check it out http://tinyurl.com/edbzo JUST BE CAEFUL if you subscribe to the podcast rather than downloading the mp3 - I ended up with mistakenly downloading a non-GBV edition to my extreme annoyance....
The Official Ironmen Rally Song was the one that turned me on to GBV. I've gotta agree with most of the earlier additions, I'd also include A Salty Salute, Striped White Jets and Father Sgt Christmas Card - I freaking love that song! |
