A few months back I was chatting with a couple of people from this forum about New Mexico. Unfortunately, I've forgotten their usernames. So maybe they'll remember the conversation.
In any case, I'm going to New Mexico for a couple of weeks. I want to spend most of my time in Albuquerque. I'm not a big fan of Santa Fe. So, if anybody's been to Albuquerque and has any opinions about the city or suggestions on what to do it would be aprreciated.
Thanks.

You sure you don't have that reversed? You're not a big fan of Santa Fe and you want to spend most of your time in Albequerque?
If you change your mind I'd be happy to talk Santa Fe. Can't help you with Albuquerque. Wouldn't want to either, for humanitarian reasons.

Why humanitarian? In my opinion, Santa Fe is a rich man's tourist spot capitailzing off of the Indian lifestyle. Albuquerque is pretty real. Last time I was there I was only able to spend a day in Alb.
What is this 'Humanitarian" issue?

While I understand your "rich man's tourist spot" stance, I also know Santa Fe to be a cool place to hang out (the coolest, actually). Then there's the fact that Albuquerque's the armpit of the Southwest. No offense meant, callahan.
Now if you don't mind, floop and I have to hit 10,000 Waves to get a little r+r.

Sorry I asked. I didn't mean to crash your little clique. It was just a question. I respect that you like Santa Fe.
You still haven't explained what you mean by not wanting to discuss Albuquerque for humanitarian reasons. Have you spent time there?
As for my problem with Santa Fe,it reminds me of a hollywood set.

Eh, no worries. OK, so tell me why you like Santa Fe. I do like Taos and am planning to go there again.
I know Albuquerque is osrt of an ugly city. But please, do tell me what you mean by not wanting to discuss it for humanitarian reasons.
By the way, Nob Hill and Old Town are really nice areas.

I got food poisoning in Old Town the one time I didn't make a beeline from the airport to Santa Fe.
Taos depresses me because it's haves and have-nots: you got your Julia Robertses and Tori Amoses and then you got your passed out Indians.
Santa Fe rocks. Tons of great restaurants (and not all of them expensive) and nice little dives for casual food. Skiing's OK, a couple of nice spots for swimming, boatloads of art galleries. And, I'm sorry but you plain old get a better view of the majestic endless NM scenery than Albq affords. If you're there in the summer, the Opera House is a nice spot to have a drink and looksee at sunset, even if you're not into opera. Plus, this gets addictive:

Albuquerque is the only city I've ever been to in NM and I'll just say it was nice to be passin' through. |

Albuquerque is the smelly, dingleberry-laden bunghole of the Southwest. |

Ok, Ok! I'll go back to Santa Fe! I'm gonna be there for a couple of weeks. But, I do want to check out Albuquerque this time, too.

Well, I do get the feeling that none of the Albuquerque critics here have really spent time there. I mean, I keep hearing it's the armpit, it's stinky, food poisoning, but has anybody really scratched the surface of the city? I do know that a lot of New Mexico's natives really resent Santa Fe and love Albuquerque.

There's a lot of hucksters out at the Amtrak stop and one of'em sells really good burritos. Been through twice and I caught her both times, that was nice. I guess I didn't care much for the burning piles of trash I saw as we were leaving (both times). But go into town and report back to us about "The Real AB". Like I said, I was just passin' through. |

Frog, that is one sexy donkey horse thing you got there. I'd like to call it a sexy ass, but I feel I would somehow be a little off base with that.
I tend to think of human beings as huge rubbery test tubes, too, with chemical reactions seething inside |

I took this pic in Elizabethtown, a ghost town in Nothern NM. That, uh, sexy ass is the only form of life I found there :)

I spent 3 days in Albuquerque in 1990 or 92 (can't remember...). I would have liked to explore it a little more than I did, the problem is that you can't walk a mile without stumbling across an interstate highway, or someone suggesting you to stay away from "that part of the city".
That said, I think the #1 armpit of the SW is El Paso.

Stopped in and spent time in El Paso on a Greyhound bus trip. Take my advice, 'tis a genuine shithole. |

Maybe this one?
Downtown Albq seen from the station :(
The Santa Fe / Lamy Amtrak station. OK, no burritos here, but... no concrete either :)

I can at the very least vouch for an excellent standard of MILF at the Alberquerque Whole Foods.

Have you ever been to Amarillo, Texas? I'd say that's about the worst I've seen in the south west. On the east coast my vote goes to Passaic N.J.

Never been to South Baltimore.....Not that I knnow of, anyhow.
I have visited friends in Baltimore. I thought it was pretty cool in a funky, rundown sort of way. Maybe that's why I like Albuquerque, too.

Heh, I was waiting for someone to bring up my hometown Baltimore! IMO, South Baltimore can't touch West Baltimore. Good place to stock up on your crack supply.
