I know I'm a bit late but I'm only starting to get into the FL. I got Yoshimi when it was released and liked it a lot, and then last month I bought Transmissions from the Satellite Heart and it's awesome. What does the new album sound like? Also, which record do I get next?

Not that I'm a huge FL guy, but I quite like Soft Bulletin, worth a check out.

[EDIT] And I haven't heard the new one...

I like some of their songs, but not entire albums. Anybody saw the documentary that came out last year on them?

The soft bulletin is awesome. Check out Clouds Taste Metallic for a rawer (is that a word?) sound!

The new album is pretty "Spacey" sounding. There are a couple songs that sound like Beck singing in that weird falsetto that he sings with. Every song is so different with such dynamics! I think I am driving my employees nuts with it because I have been playing it nonstop since 8am!

I'm not really impressed with the first song. It sounds like a b-side.

The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song

Yeah yeah yeah yeah...
If you could blow up the world with the flick of a switch
Would you do it?
Yeah yeah yeah yeah...
If you could make everybody poor just so you could be rich
Would you do it?
Yeah yeah yeah yeah...
If you could watch everybody work while you just lay on your back
Would you do it?
Yeah yeah yeah yeah...
If you could take all the love without giving any back
Would you do it?
Yeah yeah yeah yeah...
So we cannot know ourselves
What we'd really do

With all your power
With all your power
With all your power
What would you do?

No no no no no no...
If you could make your own money and then give it to everybody
Would you do it?
No no no no no no...
If you knew all the answers and could give it to the masses
Would you do it?
No no no no no no...
Are you crazy?
It's a very dangerous thing
To do exactly what you want
Because you cannot know yourself
What you'd really do

With all your power
With all your power
With all your power
What would you do?
Yeah yeah yeah yeah...

Silly, but a little too silly for me. It's reminding me of the band-turned-pop thing Weezer did with their latest album. The best part of the song is the "whoa" in the middle of the song.

Free Radicals

You think you're so radical
I think you ought to stop
(Say what?)
But you're going international
They're gonna call the cops
(No no no)
You're turning into a poor man's Donald Trump
I know those circumstances make you wanna jump
Oh no!

You think you're (a) radical
But you're not so radical
In fact your fanatical
Fanatical!

Woah!

I'll tell you right now
(Right now)
You ought to change your mind
(Yes!)
(Why?)
All of your friends are standing in line
They're getting tired of your attitude fast
Without all your bodyguards
How long would you last?
(Not long!)

You think you're (a) radical
But you're not so radical
In fact your fanatical
Fanatical!

Traditional "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" mild dicsco songwriting with a touch of Pavement dissonance, plus some interesting experimental (nearly boring) sounds.

The Sound of Failure

she is starting to live her life
from the inside out
sound of failure calls her name
she's decided to hear it out

so go tell britney
and go tell gwen
she's not trying to go
it's all them

cause she's too scared that she
she can't pretend
to understand
where to begin

(she can go and tent)
oh while you keep steering this
(she's steering this)
it's just a song going through your head
(all day)
let them go on
let them go on
(let them go on)
on on on

stand alone in the graveyard
while the moon sprays its fireworks in your head
the sound of failure calls her name
she's decided to hear it out

so go tell britney
and go tell gwen
she's not trying to go
it's all them [it's old then?]

cause she's too scared that she
she can't pretend
to understand
where to begin

(she can go and tent)
or why you keep steering this
(she's steering this)
it's just a song going through your head
let them go on
let them go on

well it can
(she's all it)
oh whle you keep steering this
(she's steering this)
it's just a song going through your head
let them go on
let them go on
well it can
(she's all it)
oh while you keep steering this
(she's steering this)
it's just a song going through your head
let them go on
let them go on
(on)
whell it can go on
(she's all of it)
oh while you keep steering this
(she's steering this)
it's just a song going through your head
let them go on
let them go on
well aware

Mediocre. I feel asleep at the beginning, I woke to the noise, I turned down the volume. It's a melody that could have been written in 2 minutes, which took 100 hours to record.

My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion

they tell us autumns a comin'
and soon everything around us will die
only a fool beleives that
he is different from the birds in the sky
all those birds go chasin
some better sunny days
you can't hear them singin'
cus they've all gone away
but this one bird can't leave you
it stays through the winter time
you can't it hear it sing
but you can hear it as it flies
so don't you beleive them
they'll destroy you with their lies
they only see the obvious
they see the sun go down
but they don't see it rise

this one loves to lead you
you can hear it as it flies
it's not very loud
but you can hear it if you try

so don't you beleive them
yes its true someday everything dies
you won't let that defeat us
we can't see but we can hear it as it flies

I took two spins. Pretty bad let down to so much hype for the new record. Don't waste your time.

You probably thought "Ween - Quebec" sucked too because it didn't sound like the other records they recorded. Two listens is hardly enough ammo to trash any album.

You can't possibly believe this.

Haven't heard the new Flaming Lips yet; I do like them (even bought the Fearless Freaks DVD) but I haven't heard a single album that I don't consider hit and miss.

Nothing is ever something.

If I truly didn't believe this then I wouldn't be at this site here and now. FB has always been music that has "grown" on me. I don't think there is any FB album that I immediately listened to and was "blown away" His songs, lyrics always seem to take a little time to sink in.

it's growing on me like moss.

but i'd like to point out that the first track should have been a secret track

I must say that I am having a hard time really getting into this album. I like several songs, but I just listened to Yoshimi and feel it is such a better album overall. I've only had war for about a week and a half, but I think Yoshimi and the Soft Bulletin grabbed me much more quickly.

In the sales bin this month I found the "Yeah Yeah Yeah Song" single and the "20 Years of Weird" live comp, both of which are crap. The sound of the live tracks is worse than any boot I bought 15 years ago, and the album tracks aren't great either. Total rip-off if I hadn't bought it for €3. Makes me want to give up on the FL.
