Your address is in LA? Your profile says you're in the UK! I wouldn't have asked you send me this if I'd know you were so far away!

i saw lytle at schuba's in chicago 2 nights ago. best show i've ever seen. i feel like that's the way the songs were meant to be heard. i slapped him on the back as he walked out of the room after his set.
i love that man.
my brother makes grandaddy-sounding music and it's on myspace. he did 4 grandaddy covers that are up there right now. check them out. some more obscure stuff.

got to go to the Friday show, and the saturday show i got there in time for the LAST song. had to work till 9:30, on a Saturday! anyway, i'm too tired to do a proper review at the moment but i absolutely loved it. jason lytle is my favorite.
when my girlfriend and i were getting our car in the parking structure after the show he and his friend were haning out at their van having a beer and we went up and talked to them for a little bit. that made the tragedy of the second show all worthwhile..
i'll give more details later and try to think of the setlist. he played TONS of super rare stuff. and some new material.
AND i saw Dave Phillips there. yep, Dave Phillips. guess he has good taste in music.
i noticed that someone put up some videos from the Friday night on youtube..
http://youtube.com/watch?v=EXOY5-RtRmY
enjoy
ps. Jose you're a saint. i have you to thank for these shows

anytime floop. i seriously can't wait to read your review, or "account," really. you talked to lytle?! shit, man. i'd just be happy to shake his hand and thank him. maybe urge him to continue releasing music...

'Nature Anthem' graces the new coca-cola ad over here. I hope they've been paid handsomely. Top 40 number 1 spot, here we come! |

yeah, Nature Anthem was in a Honda commercial too.
as for the show "account".. i don't know what to say except what a treat it was. it's like Jose put it, it's almost like this is the way these songs were meant to be heard. i loved their full set the two times i got to see it, and it's nice to get the fat bass and big sound. but there's something even better about seeing him in such an intimate enviornment like this. kind of like being able to sit around with him while he's in his home studio or something..
i've been listening to his music a LOT lately. i'm just so fascinated that this guy with no musical training living in the middle of fucking nowhere creates such sophisticated, beautiful music. and he's one of the few songwriters out there who i would say his lyrics are genuine poetry.
like i said, after the show my girlfriend and i were getting our car out of the parking structure. on the way out of the club we could peer into the backstage cool people area and assumed he was back there with a bunch of LA groupies. and then we look way in the corner of the parking lot and he's there with his friend drinking a beer. it was almost like they were hiding. when we went up he seemed really sweet and shy and genuinely complimented that we liked the show. totally humble. he was saying he hoped it worked (the solo set up) almost looking for our approval or something. all i could do was beg him to come back soon. i almost didn't have the guts to go talk to him but my girlfriend insisted and started talking to him, saying 'my boyfriend loves your music, you're his favorite band, we play your music all the time' etc.. they asked us if we were from LA and made some small talk. i almolst got the impression that they didn't have anything to do and would have come hang out with us if we asked. during the show he talked about how he had been checking out all the skate parks around and afterwards, i thought of how cool it would have been to go skate with him (in a fantasy world).
anyway, here's what i remember of the setlist (not in order):
under the western freeway: everything beautiful is far away
software slump: hewlett's daughter jed's other poem
sumday: go in the go for it saddest vacent lot in all the world
the diary of todd zilla: valley son
fambly cat: jeeze louise elevate myself summer it's gone
rarities/bsides: ghost of 1672 protected from the rain why would i want to die? my small love
i know there way more bsides but i can't remember them all at the moment. and he played 2 songs i've never heard which i'm guessing had to be new material (though there are still some floating out there i don't have)
anyway, he seemed in really good spirits and happy about playing music, so i'm just happy that we can look forward to more to come... i can't wait.

If they ever reform, they could call themselves Grandson, but that would be a crap idea.

I saw that one on ebay, and I immediately saw the hoax, but I was too late to warn you. I failed you floop. It's a pretty ugly bootleg I think, no way it's official

did we ever discuss "yours truly, the commuter?"
that second half is... i don't really have words for it. the most beautiful movement of music he's written, i suppose.
can't wait for the new one. and if they actually make a new grandaddy record... well, fuck my face.

i just read that interview where lytle says he's seriously considering making a new grandaddy album and making it sound like grandaddy. he seems to be pretty inspired by the idea, so here's hoping.
