Watching the End of The Century DVD, it just seems like he was a horrible, delinquent, violent youth until he was 20 years old, and then when he was in the Ramones, he treated everyone horribly, too. But since he managed financial matters and stuff, people respected him. Well, it just strikes me as a little disturbing. I understand he was very dedicated to his job. He never took a break. For 22 years, he was with the Ramones, working night and day. Recording. Touring. He didn't let CJ speak up to suggest that Joey take a break even though Joey was very sick at the time. I just don't think he had to be so mean to everyone. He admitted in the movie that he wasn't very friendly. He didn't socialize. Apparently, he punched Dee Dee in the head if Dee Dee missed a note. That's disturbing. Besides, I heard Johnny miss a few chords at a live show once. Did Johnny punch himself in the head if he messed up? I think Johnny may have been a bit arrogant, too. He indirectly stated that he was the only crucial contributor to the band's sound. Not to mention he stole Joey's girlfriend. Controlling is one thing. I respect his ability to keep the band in line, to instill its capacity as a hard-working, fully functioning unit. But it seems to me like he was rotten and arrogant and bitter. I don't know, though. I really don't know. Your thoughts?

Well, the fact of the matter is that The Ramones were a collection of fundamentally flawed individuals. I'm a HUGE Ramones fan and have been since the early eighties (I saw them in '84 when they came through the peg). But there's no denying that none of them would have amounted to anything individually (excepting the drummers). They only worked as a unit. I suspect Johnny was the only one of the three front men smart enough to truly understand that. He knew that none of them really had alot to offer outside of the band. I imagine that had it not been for him being a total prick, the rest of the guys would barely have gotten out of bed in the morning.

He was an avowed Republican. But looking on the bright side, he deserves points for not being a Democrat.

Worst thing about him was the constant politicking from the stage.

I got my brother End Of The Century for Christmas. It's supposed to be a good, if you will, 'rockumentary'. :)

I've heard many reports of Johnny being a real prick, however at the end of his life he apparently became a real gentleman and a geniunely nice guy, except to his fellow Ramones. People as diverse as Eddie Vedder, Vincent Gallo, Rob Zombie and Mike Watt were all having said to reach out to him in the last years of his life and made strong friendships. I believe the first three were all present at the time of his death. It's a real shame that such great music was created by such unhappy people who really didn't like each other. For some reason that makes me sad.

I liked the documentary. Tend to separate the person from the persona. Meaning, you might like the music they make, the paintings they paint and the hoops they lay but in fact that doesn't make them a good person. For example, I think Hemmingway was one of the most amazing writers but as a person I have heard bad things about him and he really was into hunting-- things that I hate. But, this doesn't stop me from liking his writing.

Another example of this is that my husband's mom told my husband when he was little to like what Pete Rose does but not to use him as a role model of how to live your life. That was way before he got into all that trouble but I think it helped my husband understand as a kid that you can like people for different reasons.

I wonder if the bowl he used for his haircuts will end up on ebay.

Billy Zoom has his amp repair shop down the street from my house and he told me once that Johnny was great guy, he'd go visit him in New York once in a while and they'd go to baseball games. He had no idea he was sick though until he died.
