I'm just listening to Cult of Ray again and I keep forgetting how much I love this song. Is there anyone else out there that likes this or is it just me (I never seem to hear anyone talk about it)?
In fact, I'd say that though I've listened to COR umpteen^5th times, I like the album as a whole more with each listen. Creature Crawling, A&R, Cult of Ray, Men In Black, Shazeb, and the Marsist is even starting to finally grow on me.

As this is the umpteenth^3 discussion of COR, I won't restate all my feelings on it. There are still a few tracks that IMHO don't live up to FB's '90s standards, but the good tracks are amazing. The thing that always strikes me is the fantastic production and Lyle's wicked guitar tone. |

Heh, yeah, I know, but what can I say. Old topics made new. Or, at least, active...
Yeah, the production is great, of course Lyle shreds it up nicely, and it you take those particular tracks, you have the core of a worthy follow up to TOTY. It's the rest of them that kind of bring things down.
But more this thread was about A&R specifically. I should go find out how that song did in the Survivors...

I seem to remember it got more than one vote for most underrated FB song, one of which was mine. |

Dean, I love A & R. It's in my top 5 favorite FB songs. I love the spaciness of the song, the immediate (but effective) transition from the one section to the other section at 2:27, and the riff itself. |

If there were lyrics, then it'd be a great song indeed. Remarkable how they achieve that sound considering the 'live' setup of the band.
What kind of pedal is Frank using for his guitar?

I think it'd be a hard song to put a vocal melody on without losing that feel that IceCream is talking about. At that time, incidentally, Frank wasn't doing the live recording yet. But I do also love that guitar effect. And the breakdown around 1:30.

The only Frank album I've never heard. I can't seem to locate it anywhere being that I'm a bit of a "come lately" to the whole Frank thing. I know I can probably find it online but to be honest I'm not too interested in jumpin' through the hoops (credit card/shipping cost/waiting for it) of ordering a record online that's widely considered to be his weakest. I am a big fan of Lyle though, so I'm still curious. I'm still waiting for it to surface in the bargain bin. |

Good luck with the bargain bin. It's definately worth the online quest, Heywood. There's a lot of good stuff on COR.

Deaner, funny you make this thread today. Last night it came up randomly on my iTunes and i was sitting here REALLY enjoying it, thinking "damn thats a great sound."
However, i must be the voice of reason and say that more than likely, the basic track WAS cut live on COR. I've read a GUITAR PLAYER piece w/ Lyle about his tone on "Shazeb" and he said that for this album the basic tracks were all cut live with minimal overdubs.
And it appears, Ziggy that FB is using a Tremolo pedal.

Yeah, there's that fabulous acoustic show from around the time where he's showing off his new toys, ha, 'only vibrato and tremelo', apparently. The 'Shazeb' tone exactly.
COR is a fine collection of songs. Maybe it's better appreciated when you play the tracks in a different order. |

And Rubin dropped FB because the follow up album didn't meet his sonic standards. Funny that the recent Rolling Stone article on Rubin didn't mention this. The Cult of Frank is one of my favorite FB tunes. The main riff reminds me of Pinball Wizard. Lyle is a guitar god. Hope he's still prospering. |

If prospering means working with Frank Black, then yes he is. Or was. That's if the 'sicilian' sessions are done and dusted.
The Adventure and the Resolution is one of fB's finest songs. Ten years old and 'Cult of Ray' schools so many of todays "bands" aswell as todays Frank. In parts, this is fB at his creative best. Frank Before Catholics. I would find it hard to understand how a Frank Black fan could not like A&R.
W'oh! Hold ya horses there, fbc. Catholics fans wouldn't necessarily like it. I always presume this board is Fb through and through. I think it's great that some folk are here primarily because of the Pixies/Catholics so I can tell them the bit in the middle was the best. |

i try not to see them as records, too claustrophobic. i prefer to take each song as an individual rather than part of a collective.
You like 'the Adventure..' though, Bill? What a song to play along to. |

Also some funky time signatures going on in various parts of the record. Like two measures of 4/4 and then one of 2/4.

IMHO, COR may have a few iffy songs but Pistolero is much weaker overall. The highs on COR are much higher.
And, as has been said before on this board, COR is really the first Catholics record.

COR is an awesome record. it's his most underrated album. excellent production. minimalistic but teriffic sound.
and if the tablature on fb.net is right (i'm not much of a musician), then the song COR uses every major-chord (except D#). f**** unbelievable.

I like to lend out my FB CDs to anyone who wants to listen to them. I also like to give them as gifts. This is why I have ordered FB's complete catalog from amazon.com at least six times. Each time, Pistolero comes back ordered about two months late, and not once have I received Cult Of Ray. I too, have never heard a single note of that record.
Last year I subscribed to Rhapsody music service (probably the coolest thing in the world) and was pleased to see all of FB's recordings a mouse click away. All but COR.
Why is this record so damned hard to come by?

I guess I was lucky because I managed to get the edition with the bonus disc a cool sticker a year or two ago, I think it was through the amazon marketplace so check it out. Also it's a great album, I know lots of people aren't to keen on it but I love it so if you haven't got it and can't find it do yourself a favour and download it from soulseek or something, you've got nothing to lose. That's what I did initially but then I had to own it.

I'll get COR in due time. What's great is it will be a new release to me. So will all the other material I haven't heard yet. I'm in a good place with Frank's stuff. Everthing I have is still wonderful to my ears. Myabe I'm a bit slow, but I am still somewhat overwhelmed by all of it. It's so delicious, I don't want to miss anything.

I seem to recall Frank said they couldn't play it properly live, and that this track was a bunch of different things razor-edited together.
