Rolling Stone had an issue about a year ago that listed the top 500 songs of the Rock and Roll era. The two Pixies songs in it were Monkey Gone to Heaven and (I think) Wave of Mutilation (in that order).

I kind of dispute that - it's not my impression that Monkey is their biggest hit of all time.

With the understanding that where their songs charted when originally released is not necessarily the overriding factor (since so much of the band's fan base growth occurred after they split), what is the Pixies song that you think is the most popular among average music fans. What's in the discussion?

I think that "Where is My Mind?" is the one for what it's worth.

The 1997 rerelease of Debaser for Death To The Pixies is they're highest ever UK chart single, reaching 23. The only other two that charted are Planet Of Sound at 27, and Velouria at 28. Planet Of Sound is they're only ever single to break the US top 100, reaching 92!!

and Tame after it was on the Smirnoff ad... that's how I've had to describe the band a few times to people!

Actually Tame is maybe the best way to introduce people to the Pixies... It's not as obvious/ubiquitous as some of the songs seem to have become?
I'd put in a shout for Here Comes Your Man, but I think Where Is My Mind? would just edge Debaser as the best-known.

Almost certainly Here Comes Your Man and Alison. THose are almost the only two Pixies vids I can remember seeing on Much Music and as we all know, when you're talking about "the masses" you're talking about videos...to be honest, I think the Pixies remain largely unknown to the masses. I can't believe how often I'll be discussiing music with someone who is a halfways knowledgable music fan and they won't know much of anything about the Pixies. Usually if I bring them up they say something like "that's the band with the fat guy with the high pitched voice isn't it?" I've come to believe that the name "Pixies" is part of the problem. Without having heard the band people write them off as lightwieght, fluffy and inconsequential.

But artistically I think maybe Monkey Gone To Heaven, Debaser, Wave of Mutilation and Tame represent the height of the Pixies creative output. Theres lots of cool songs on Surfer Rosa and on the later albums, but I think Doolittle is the work of a band that is absolutely firing on all cylinders.

In terms of music videos I suppose I've seen 'Monkey Gone To Heaven' more than any other on the T.V.
And I find it really annoying that when talking to someone who doesn't know who they are, I always have to start saying...
"Well, y'know 'Fight Club'....."

Using myself as a reference I'd say Debaser. When I started listening to the Pixies that was the only song that I thought I'd heard before (a number of times). Otherwise I think, as mentioned above, Where is My Mind is pretty well known.

I always got the impression that Here Comes Your Man was their biggest hit. Don't know why

The Here Comes Your Man video sometimes makes appearances in top 100 lists on mtv, but it would probably be repaced by Where is my Mind if that had a video.

Planet Of Sound was at the 97th in the US charts. Don't know if they did better with Monkey, Here comes or Velouria...

I hear Here Comes Your Man on the radio more than any of their other songs, but I'd have to say Where Is My Mind?

Managed to get 'Debaser' requested in a club tonight.

I'd say it's the holy trinity of the 'fucking monkey song', debaser and 'the fight club song'. With HCYM tagging along.

A few years back, I think I asked a DJ to play Debaser in a club that used to play a few Pixies songs now and again, I think he said he did'nt have it.

From what I've read on the net,"Planet Of Sound" reached # 92 on the Hot 100,the only Pixies song to hit that chart,So on paper it's their biggest song.

Somewhere in the 90's ,anyway,it doesn't matter cause who cares what the mainstream thinks?their all a bunch of sheep who are too stupid and insecure to make their own decision so they do what everybody else is doing and listen to what everybody else is listening to.

I totally agree with you tricky richard.....im glad that the pixies arent as famous as they should be...and im glad that people who listen to poppy hits on the radio and think they know good music, know about them...underground bands are the best!...and cult followings are way better then being famous in the pop world....but as peops where saying above...i always thought that here comes your man was their most famous..that and where is my mind of course....its either one of those two songs that the average pop lover might have heard before...
personally....my favourite pixies song is probly river euphrates...or Blown Away....well actually i cant really choose...but i dont think its on doolittle....doolittle in a whole is their best album....my favourite doolittle song is probly Crackity jones..or dead...or i bleed....oh what the hell...i cant choose...

After I got into the Pixies I could most easily find a reference point for telling other people who they were with Here Comes Your Man. But ever since Fight Club it's been Where Is My Mind? Does that make sense? Is that what we're talking about?

Frank himself actually answered this question of mine in the Boston Globe today! He said that "Here Comes Your Man" is the song that "Joe Blow" knows me for.

No doubt it was "Here Comes Your Man".

...although I dont know where it placed in the charts, it was played very often on the radio and mtv in 1988-89. I remember this video was the first time I saw the Pixies....it was a godsend.

...and if you were like me, feeling bombarded with Def Leppard, Warrant, Guns and Roses, etc...on TV, Radio and at school, you know EXACTLY what I mean.

I have thought long and hard about this question. My answer, now has to be impartial because you can't pick just one song. So my answer is clinical-- the #1 selling single in terms of copies sold throughout the world.

I'd go with Where is My Mind, just because it's definitely the most familiar and it's a song people can immediately react to. I suppose it's just a memorable song
