Mose Allison: Ever Since I Stole the Blues

A one hour film from Artisan Pictures. Directed by Paul Bernays.
Premiere on Friday 9th December, 9pm, BBC4

Mose Allison – a white Jazz and Blues singer who came out of the Mississippi Delta - has inspired key figures in British Rock ‘n’ Roll. As Pete Townsend says in the film ‘Without hearing Mose I wouldn’t have written My Generation’.

Better known through cover versions of his songs by artists like Van Morrison, Elvis Costello and Bonnie Raitt (all of whom are featured) we journey inside the sardonic world of the man they call the Jazz Sage. Mose Allison’s cool and hip philosophical lyrics and ultra laid back piano style - on songs like Parchman Farm, Your Mind is On Vacation and Everybody Cryin’ Mercy – have been pointing the way to where Jazz and Blues meet for over 50 years.

The film takes the 78 year old legend back to the Mississippi crossroads town he was born in and contains songs from his London concerts earlier this year. Also featured is an unseen performance by Van Morrison of one of Mose’s classics, together with a new exclusive performance by Loudon Wainwright, pioneering grunge band Frank Black & The Pixies’s energetic tribute song Allison and The Who’s rousing version of Mose’s Young Man Blues.

Director Paul Bernays also made the recent BBC documentaries about Richard Thompson and Emmylou Harris.

This guy is playing in my neck of the woods soon. I don't know any of his music except the song the Clash covered but I'm thinking I should go check him out anyway.
