A party really interested in beating Bush might have found someone more charismatic than him (there´s gotta be at least a few out of 300 million) but that man suits the state down to the ground because he is not an arena for public debate. It´s a one-party state masquerading as a two-party. If it was otherwise, with the diversity of colours and languages in the US there would have been a president who wasn´t white by now, and choosing between two guys from the same college fraternity? well there´s a ghoulish sense of humour at work there. What do the candidates have to be Siamsese twins before everyone says Hey they´re fucking us!

Good for you Brian.
My brother-in-law's brother is hopefully going to become the new mayor of St. Paul, MN tonight. Defeating a "democrat" who endorsed Bush in 2004. |

That reminds me of the Futurama episode where the two main candidates for the presidency of Earth are clones.

Maybe they'll recall HIM, too. Then Gary Coleman will have another shot!

I'd like to pre-empt any Erebus reply with the following: an argument against or link to an article detailing the wrong doings of the Democratic National Party or one or more of its members is NOT an effective (or otherwise) defence of the Repulican Party, it's members or supporters. Thank you.
and you are ill prepared to fight living in a world of soft and white in air conditioned battle zones I pity you!

Funny that you should say that when this thread basically asserts a pro-Dem position by attacking the alleged wrong doings of the Repubs.
I admit that one of the best arguments for the Republicans is that they are not Democrats. As I have argued many times, the Dems cannot be taken seriously on national security, and their social-welfare domestic policies are not based on sound appreciation of human nature. Regarding whether arguing against the Dems might consitute an "effective" defense of the Repubs, I suggest that timely attention to detailing the wrong doings of the Commies and Nazis could have provided effective defense of the state and its people, even without actively promoting their oppositions. And yes, I think I am comparing the Dems to the Commies and Nazis, at least in terms of the wrongheadedness of their fundamental assumptions and the long-term threat they pose to individual freedoms. |

you can't simply compare either Democrates or Republicans to the Stalinistic Sovjet-Union or Nazi-Germany. That's an insult to all the people who died under their regime. If you don't know why....read a book or don't, shit, I don't care

I will address only your first statement. I know I've said this before, and I really don't feel it needs to be said again, but you seem to have some issue comprehending this fundamental point: attacking the Republican Party, in any way, for any reason, is not in and of itself a pro-Democratic position. Serioulsy Erebus, I'm just tired of it. I am not an American. I don't vote in your elections and I have no say in who runs your country. When I attack your government (be it George W., Karl Rove, or anyone else), I am NOT taking a de facto pro-Democratic position. I think of your two party system as the Republican Party and the Republican Party Lite. Are you so trapped within the confines of that system that you beleive there are only two sides to any story?

I think I adequately qualified the comparison, and I don't hear you complaining about the constant labelling of Bush and the Republicans as fascists, Nazis, and the like. |

I am not trapped when it comes to imagining alternatives, but when it comes to the realities of political power, it's Dems vs. Repubs here in America. I would prefer to see a coalition of true libertarians and civil libertarians. That might offer a political party I could more easily support. But speaking from political pragmatism, most of my energy is expended against the Dems and their dangerous naivety. There is a significant difference between the parties. Just ask bin Ladin, Kim Jong-il, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and Hu Jintao which party they want to see in power. |

I agree that the Repubs have been wrong in many of their dealings with autocratic regimes, but I repeat that the autocrats would prefer to deal with the accommodationist Dems. |

What complaints would bin Ladin have with the Bush administration? He seems to be doing just fine. Just opened a new branch in Iraq. |

Don't I complain about the the comparison of Republicans to Nazis in my first freakin' sentence? people only have the right to compare leaders to Stalin or Hitler when they are as bad or about the be as bad as them.

[edit] removed stupid stuff and left the following valid and substantive contribution to the discussion:
i dont mind the republicans so much...I just wish they'd stop celebrating excessive masculinity and hegemonically promoting the patriarchial society as the road to heaven.
and cloroforming me and anally raping me at night.
like for them to stop that too. |

I go through all these political threads and I never post a reply because politics is such a sticky subject and arguing never seems to get anywhere. But I will say that I respect Erebus' lone attempts at trying to balance the scale in an obviously liberal (for lack of a better term) minded forum. I may not agree with a lot of his views but he is right when he talks about the pervasive naivete in much of the "liberal" world. |

As long as we keep imposing geographical coordinates on things as fluid as opinions we´ll always be perplexed.

The short answer is "Yes". As no doubt do many of us, I see myself as something of a political renegade. But then this all hinges on the definition of ultra-right. I see the ultra-right and -left as those who would impose a rigid agenda upon a people, expecially in terms of domestic policies. The ultras are so sure that they know what is correct and proper that they set out to impose their views on all, most especially those who oppose. I know the ultra-right want us all to be good little Xians, and they would control school curricula, etc. I am against this, but I'm much more concerned about the control the ultra-left has imposed upon US law and social policy. To my mind that is where the threat lies. But you know that, and I don’t want to reopen the entire mess here. This is the third time I’ve tried to frame a reply to your question and each time I have become bogged down in definitions.
I really am, or try to be, a hard-core libertarian. As such I reject the premises of both the ultras. The only planks of my agenda are stability where US interests are concerned and resistance to any agenda from either of the ultras. Because in the last seventy years the left has been far more successful at imposing its agenda upon the American people and because the left seems incomprehensively unrealistic on terrorism, I side with the Republicans.
