Arctic Monkeys top UK singles chart
The Sheffield band's first proper release is a smash hit
Arctic Monkeys have done what Coldplay and Franz Ferdinand haven't managed yet by going straight to the top of the UK singles chart tonight (October 23)

The Sheffield four-piece, who are next week's NME cover stars, ended Sugababes' three-week stay at the top by going right to the summit with their debut single proper 'I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor'. And boyband McFly went in at Three, whose 'I Wanna Hold You' was unable to get near the new kids on the block.

It's a remarkable achievement for the band, whose only other release to date was a limited EP earlier this year called 'Five Minutes With The Arctic Monkeys'. And this week's NME will have an exclusive interview with the band of the moment so don't miss the full, definitive version of their incredible rise to fame. Dated October 29, It's on sale from Tuesday (October 25) in London and Wednesday nationwide.

In the album chart, Prodigy's 'Their Law' singles compilation has gone straight to the top, while Simply Red go in at Three with 'Simplified' and Depeche Mode at Six with 'Playing The Angel'.

The Top Ten UK singles are:

1. Arctic Monkeys - 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor'
2. Sugababes - 'Push The Button'
3. McFly - 'I Wanna Hold You'
4. Robbie Williams - 'Tripping'
5. Pussycat Dolls feat Busta Rhymes - 'Don't Cha'
6. Kanye West feat Jamie Foxx - 'Gold Digger'
7. Friday Hill - 'Baby Goodbye'
8. Daniel Powter - 'Bad Day'
9. Sean Paul - 'We Be Burnin''
10. Liberty X - 'Song 4 Lovers'

Thing is, the rest of the top 10 is hideously awful but quite populist, some major names in there. This is a pretty impressive feat, all things considered.
Must be the drummers cheeky wink.

I only heard it for the first time last night, although I'd heard the buzz about the Arctic Monkeys. One of the good things about this is that they seem to have become popular through gigging and the internet. If only the record companies would realise this is possible. Saying that, it gives smaller bands the power to push themselves more.

Anyway, good song. (but so is the Kanye West one.)

Is it just me, or did they all appear in the 70s Grange Hill at some point?

I believe the Arctic Monkeys played in my town (Wigan) a few months ago.

Steve - title of the thread: Good Song... its a good song, it doesn't really matter if they're influenced by someone or other does it? I certainly don't think they're ripping anyone off.

How can a third rate song like this get to the top, whereas one of the best 'indie' songs of the last few years, Take Me Out, did not?

This highlights to me once again that popularity does not equal quality.

I don't like it, but I'm happy for Domino, cause they deserve it

sigh... imagine what it'd have been like if Pavement had gone straight in at Number one, all those years ago... how different it could have all been... sighhh

I danced to it on Saturday night. It has grown on me, I thought maybe Scummy (which seems to have a new name every week) was there only really good song.

Still way overhyped, but good look to them. If it stops the usual rubbish from being number 1 then it is hard to begrudge them their success.

sugababes- great song- because its pop considered shit
arctic monkeys - shit song- because its indie considered good.

try whistling the arctic monkeys track, near impossible, try not whistling the sugarbabes track.

edit. this isn't me just being contrary or argumentative, myself and mrs D sat mouths agape at its shitness whilst watching top of the pops, really, really bad.

For some reason Im sceptical when an indie band (or anything that isnt classed as pop or popular) gets to number 1 on the singles chart. Charts are for kids!

I don't get you Domestiques, it's dead catchy and fun, like. It's not going to change the world or anything, but its a darn sight better than the usual number one fodder.

I'm quite pleased it got to number one because it means a whole lot of worse songs didn't.

I'm waiting for the fall out though, damned scenesters.

I still have fond memories of Iron Maiden conniving their way to number one with 'Take Your Daughter To The Slaughter'.
Its a beautiful, beautiful thing.

Is getting to number 1 still a coveted thing? I mean, sure it's money, exposure and popularity, but if you got to number 1 think of all the filth you have to share it with! James Blunt, the crazy frog et al. Im actually glad the frog got to number one ahead of coldplay, the sour grapes that chrissypoo's came out with was priceless! Anyway, is getting to number 1 a good thing for all the non pop acts? Does it matter what gets to number 1? I don't know what to think anymore!
