Geez Louise this stuff gets played a lot on college radio....If anything, it just makes me wish I was listening to Television, Pere Ubu or Snakefinger...You remember, the 'first' time this stuff was around?
I cannnot help but have genuine concern about where this whole 'new music' scene is going....not groundbreaking, but sold as such.
There is a kind of...and this is going off the deep end...WASP liberal upper-middle class slumming it vibe coming from these bands that just does not settle well in my stomach.
I guess just because of the fact that I live in Montreal, and more particularly, the part of Montreal that a lot of these bands were formed...and that they struck me as rich bratty a--holes who were 'slumming it'(the kind that look away in disgust at the poverty surrounding them yet romanticize the grit of the inner city for themselves)
...personally I find it bitterly ironic that a lot of these kids toil in the working class industrial neighbourhoods while their parents are securing their estate with the purchase ans speculation of slum housing in these areas.
...overall, my point is, these bands seem to be quite disingenuous.

Although I can't really speak much about the vibe you were talking about, I can agree with you about quality of Wolf Parade. I think the new album (and all those earlier EPs) are pretty poor. Just sound like warmed-over garbage.
My favorite montreal band though, is the Unicorns. I guess I should say ex-favorite. Although they were fromt he montreal scene, I didn't get the same negative feel from them that I get from bands like Wolf Parade and the Dears.
You run all kinds of red lights except the ones on the street. When you run out of exits you can always count sheep. |

If you get tired of where it's going you can always go to where it's been. |

i don't know what's "going on" in montreal but i really love the music from arcade fire and wolf parade. i haven't really been exposed to the marketing of the music- just what i've read on internet boards. i love montreal and thought it's really cool that some good music is coming out of there. but, ya, marketing and press can really turn me off of music which is unfortunate. i guess that's one reason i like frank's music so much is that he really is genuine and that's how he presents himself. and even with the reunion tour he was pretty frank about it - he came out and said that a big part of it was the $$$.
