I've been looking into alternatives to iPods to save some cash. Anybody familiar with the Creative Zen line of MP3 players? A friend highly recommended it. Any other good brands out there? Any iPod loyalists?

Thanks for any help you can offer. And of course, in preparation, I've already created MP3s of all the Frank & Pixies CDs.

I have a Rio Carbon...awesome little player with few limitations. You can access it directly from Windows or any Windows Media based player. The version I have is 5 gb, but they have a 6 gb version now as well. It doesnt connect to iTunes, nor does it play iTunes songs, but does play mp3 and any Playsforsure based music.

Check it out...Rio Carbon

I have one of these, well the x600 which is the older version of this. The new version is slightly sleeker and nicer looing. It's a 20 gig but at about the same size and price of most 5 gigs. It may not come in pink but in my opinion is far better (and smaller, and lighter, and cheaper) then the ipod range. This model doesn't hold photos or videos, but there's other versions that do that just fine and I personally don't need that.

Here it is:

I have a 40GB Iriver H340.
i love it.
it plays anything you want except itunes music and just connects straight up to your computer like another hard drive. i love this bit cause it's just so easy to organise etc.

i haven't had any problems with mine, and i seriously don't know how i survived before i owned one.

sure, 40GB is a alot of apce, but mines all filled up, but they also do 20GB ones.
i've played round with ipods alot to try a comparison, and i like mine lots more - but what as would you expect me to say.

i have a nokia 6250i with a 1gig memory card which works well, If you are going to get a contract fone chucking in a £50 memory card makes a cheaper and handy alternative to an I Pod.

i keep saying it, but get a HI MD minidisc player, the sound quality is fantastic, better batterylife, easier to both upload and download music and has 1GB discs

I've tried using Windows Media and Real Players and other music players, but nothing is as easy to use or organize or customize as my iTunes. The same goes for the iPod. It's interface is incredibly user-friendly. Once you've had an iPod for ten minutes you can breeze through and find the music you want as though you'd had it for years. And they're quite reliable, too. If you own a Mac, you're less likely to download corrupt music files (especially viruses), but even if you don't, the iPod stands well on its own. I finally got a chance to give an iPod Nano a test run this last weekend. I love it. I'd own one by now but it doesn't have a big enough hard drive yet. As far as how they handle under pressure, here's a link my friend showed me the other day:

http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/nano.ars/3

This was pretty amazing. Apple just released some new iPods, too. They can handle some video on top of pictures and music. There's some other new features, too, but I'm only going off of what my brother told me today. I should check it out, soon. It may be time to upgrade.
Anywho, that's my two cents. I'm very pro-Apple, but I'd suggest you go sample many different players. See what feels right to you, and would be most compatable with whatever computer you'd be using.

I have the iRiver 20gig version. Fantastic. Comes with a very good recording microphone too, if that's your thing. Will play video if you upgrade the software (free of charge).

so mike, you like you iriver then?
very pleased to hear. they're great aren't they?

and ziggy = i own the US version and i can't have any video or nothing ibelieve - they've disabled that function for the US ones for some reason.
the US also hasn't updated the software for it yet, while the UK/AUS versions have changed lots. i'd have assumed they were the same, but after playing with a friends aussie version, they're actually quite different. nothing too drastic, but still noticably different.

eg - the only thing i don't like about mine is that it takesdabout a minute to start up, which the other versions don't. tho once when it reorganised my music, it loaded up real quick, but the next time i added more music and it reorganised it all, it went back to slow.
but apart from that it's a ripper.
