Frank Black Back In The Studio

by Tim Cashmere

October 13 2005

Pixies front man Frank Black is back in the studio reunited with producer Jon Tiven (David Bowie, B.B. King).

Black's 11th solo studio album will feature a brilliant array of musicians including Steve Cropper (of Booker T and the MG's and infinite more recordings fame), Reggie Young and other influential musicians from the Memphis soul scene in the 60s, as well as Cheap Trick's Tom Peterson and Bad Company's Simon Kirke.

He says until the album is finished nobody will know what direction the album will take!

The Pixies have since reformed and are touring whenever they have a spare few months.

When David Bowie did the BLACK TIE WHITE NOISE album I was engaged by his record company to do a "rock" version of his cover of the Cream song "I Feel Free." They said lose everything but the vocal, because it's a dance track and we want something rock radio can play. So I kept the Mick Ronson solo and David Bowie's vocal and added Mick Taylor and myself on guitars, Anton Fig on drums, and Jonathan Sanborn on bass and gave them a completely different version of the song which the record company loved. As the album was tanking, they wanted to rush it out to save the record, but they needed Bowie's approval to release it to radio.
He wouldn't give it. The record died, record company went out of business, and that was the end of it. I was surprised that when they did the reissue of the cd that it wasn't a bonus track, but considering the disorganization of the record company I wouldn't be surprised if they lost the master.
I still have a copy. It's pretty cool.

best,
Jon Tiven

Apologies are not enough!

For flaming Mr Tiven without any reason, you better get prepared for some extreme oral sex!

Yeah the BTWN reissue contained a whole extra disk, mainly dance remixes, plus a promo DVD of vids from the time. Strange to put so much effort into one of Bowie's weaker albums, when there is plenty of unreleased material, from his more prolific period, that is neglected.

Dear Monsieur, Ziggy and hWolsky,

I actually did a series of four different mixes, and it completely befuddles me why they didn't put at least ONE of them on the re-release. It could only have helped that particular album.

I am forbidden from distributing copies, so I suggest you email the Bowie people or go to their site and perhaps if there is enough clamoring for it, they will put it out. I'd be happy to give them another copy if they've lost theirs. They already paid for it!

best,
Jon Tiven
